Does my current address have to be on my license to take dot physical or just registered with the state (NY)? I have to wait 2 weeks for an updated license.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I wouldn't believe so. If you're afraid it would with any documentation for the physical just use the address listed on your license. I can't recall writing my address down on anything to be honest. They'll have your drivers license number and that's typically all they need. If you haven't received your updated license before you attend orientation just let them know your address has changed.

The short answer is no. Almost every state is part of a Nation-Wide contract (I forgot the name of it), and each State's DMV is required to abide by federal laws and guidelines. Ultimately every DMV may be a State facility, but all their policies, procedures, and most of their laws are a really federally mandated and govered.

Every DMV in the United States allows an individual to use a PO box to receive documents such as a replacement license for example. They will give you a print out form of what documents you must bring in to get mail to a PO box. Most States do not allow the PO box on the driver's license however, but some do. So having a physical address is not required at all for any U.S. DMV at all, nor is the accuracy of what physical address is stated on your ID or License PROVIDED you supply proper forms of proof for your MAILING address that is different from what is shown on your ID or License.

Ask at the desk for the print out of required documents needed for the mailing address to be accepted in place of what's shown on your license.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

As per your DoT you are good to go on that, but you will need to supply the DMV proper proof of a mailing address upon going to get your CLP if your address on your license is not accurate. They are required by law to ask you "is this your current address"; it is a federal crime to lie and say "yes", if it really isn't. So you just say "no", but I have a mailing address", and they will give you a print out of what forms you will need to come back with verifying that mailing address in order for them to allow you to take the test and obtain a clp. This is a process you will have to go through even if they are not mailing anything to you.

Two questions here actually.

Current Address: States require address changes within a short time period - usually 10-30 days - varies from state to state. It is actually a "ticketable offense" to not have your current address on your DL.

DOT Physical: this is a FEDERAL THING (FMCSA) - you can take your physical ANYWHERE IN THE US, and it is considered valid - as long as the practitioner is on FMCSA's list of approved medical examiners. You WILL have to produce the DOT Med Card to your state licensing bureau. Some states (like mine - FL) allow you to upload them onto the DMV site, at which point they approve it and add it to your DMV/License record. Some states allow/require you to show up in person or mail it in (not an easy feat with most DL offices close due to C-19).

The address on your DL (current or not) has nothing to do with where you take your DOT Physical, or whether you are allowed to if the address isn't "current". Since you are getting an updated DL with your current address soon, I would use your current address on the DOT Med forms (card).

The Medical Examiner also uploads the forms/results to FMCSA's site.

KO - you are NOT a CDL holder, and despite your "google fu", are really not in a position to give technical advice here on the forum. You're welcome to read and learn, but please refrain from "giving advice" on matters on which you have no actual knowledge.

Rick

I misspoke, use Rick's advice for sure. In the state of Iowa I'm able to go online and change my address but I need to appear in person to receive a new card. It sucks that as a CDL holder I'm not allowed to use the self serve kiosks in some libraries. The doc office is more concerned about your name and DL # matching than your address. If anybody makes a mention just let them know replacement is in the mail. Does NY by chance issue a paper license or slip you filled out to be issued a replacement? Minnesota issued the slip I filled out, iowa gave me a printed paper that looked exactly like my license would. Both were able to be used with my old license to show the proper info. Worst case scenario you're required to wait a week or 2 until you get the new one, but I don't see you running into any problems.

I'll be dealing with this in the next couple months as well. All the DMVs within 100 miles are booked until mid December and I'll need to renew early December.

Do you need current address on the hard card? Depends. Illinois' statute 625 ILCS 5/6-511(a) says "All persons to whom a CLP or CDL has been issued, shall notify the Driver Services Department of the Secretary of State's Office within 10 days of any change in domiciliary address. In addition, the person shall make application for a corrected CLP or CDL within 30 days after the change."

So... if a trooper asks if your address is current, and if not, how long you've been at the new address....

Sorry - my previous posting went live before I finished it. If, as an IL CDL holder in IL, you get asked about address by an enforcement authority and what is on your printed card is not the same as your actual license, be aware that you could get cited for a driver's license violation. I am speaking from 28 years of practical application of that law for both CDL and non-CDL holders. Each state may have different rules. Ill-Noize? Ten days to notify, 30 days to get a corrected issued to you. If you don't follow that guidance, and if the copper has no sense of humor (like one or two I know) you could wind up holding a sheet of paper in your hand that you'll need to 'spain to your DM.

Check your state's CDL licensing authority for the correct answer on this. I suspect the FMCSA may have some commentary as well, I'm just not in the mood to search thru US Code for answers right now.
