I was in the same situation, but I live in Maine so I don't know how your state might be different. But they have a form you have to fill out to "self certify" and I filled one out choosing "excepted intrastate", otherwise they would have downgraded my license. Then when I got another card I submitted another form. Some companies want you to have a card already, and some will get you a physical even if you already have a card.

Sorry if this question has already been asked, but i dont know how to navigate this site to find it. I was let go from my last company a month ago and my medical card is expiring at the end of the year. I want to try another job that doesnt require a CDL for a little while. I really dont want to spend money to get my card renewed. I was wondering if I can avoid doing that if i went to the DMV and certify that I will be an excepted intrastate driver. Is this the right path to not having to maintain a Medical card? Will i be able to change back to interstate when i decide to do commercial driving again? Do most companies want you to maintain it or will they pay for a new one most of the time? I have like 1 year Class A and 5 Class B if that info helps.
