Hello there,

I was wondering If I have sleep apena, would C.R. England or Pams Transport still hire me? Would they help with paying off the machines once I become settled in with the company? If my DOT Medical card shows I need a sleep study in three months, will they still hire me and help pay for the tests? thank you. Please help

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

If you are already diagnosed with Sleep Apnea , do you not have a machine? (Or, are you just 'supposing' you might have it?)

Also, many companies will do their 'own' sleep study with/on you, and have financing available accordingly. Prime comes to mind; look at threads by Truckin Along with Kearsey.

Tagged threads, re: Sleep Apnea can be found here:

Kearsey has a channel here, which describes it in detail:

Wish you the best; wondering why you are zoning in on those two companies, though?

In reply, most companies do their own sleep studies, and bill you accordingly, many with payment programs for the study and equipment.

Wish you the best, you'll find it all at Trucking Truth!!

Best to ya, and welcome~!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Carriers will not discriminate against you for having sleep apnea IF you're following the treatment plan (CPAP). I'm unsure if companies help finance your CPAP with the exception of prime (they do). The 3 month card is a 1 time deal. In order to be issued a one year card you must show CPAP usage of atleast 70%, or 21 of the previous 30 days, for a minimum of 4 hours. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea over 2 1/2 years ago and it has not negatively impacted my trucking career with the exception of yearly dot physicals rather than 2 years.

Also, I'd suggest you Apply For Paid CDL Training and see what recruiters say in regards to financing a CPAP. One of my classmates at the private school my company sent me to was declined by a few companies because he was given a 6 month card and they all required atleast 1 year. If you're able to get tested before you go that'd be best although I know the price is a bit steep for most folks. I believe my at home sleep study ran about $500 and my CPAP and supplies was another $1500. I was able to make payments of atleast $50 a month until paid in full.

Hi be aware not all companies will accept and at home study. So ask about that also.

Prime has any outside sleep study company with a satellite office at our terminals. If you use them, prime advances the money to them and you pay it back in weekly increments. You have a choice to to elsewhere but prime only has any account with Cardinal Sleep, therefore it is one your dime.

Good luck

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
