You couldn't make money under a successful company where all you had to do was the work and now you think you'll be successful by taking on the business end of it too? Ok.
You won't have trouble getting insurance, you'll have trouble affording it and have trouble with brokers/shippers trusting you with no experience.
You'd probably be better off being your own boss in the electrical field.
The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.
I'm tired of working for somebody else making them tons of money, while get a sliver. So my question is with the old experience I have back in the 90s, and the few months of the newer (in 2019), experience driving, am I going to have issues finding an insurance carrier if I buy my own truck and run under my own authority?
It's crazy how people think that owning their own truck will put them in the money. The trucking industry average profit is 3 to 5%. So you are not getting a "sliver" while making tons of money for other people. Trucking is a performance based business. I worked a flatbed job during that time period you were at Melton. This is the first I have heard about "the bottom falling out." There is a harsh reality in trucking. You have to be good at it to make good money at it. That is a simple way of putting it. There's a lot to that, but that cuts to the chase. Your paychecks going to near nothing is not an indicator that the bottom was falling out. You had a falling out with trucking maybe, but that is the only falling out that took place during that time. I was making some killer money during that time.
I am a licensed Master Electrician. I know you can make good money being an Electrician. I prefer trucking. I have owned a business before. Owners don't necessarily make lots of money. You need to dispense with that theory. One of our owner operator members just revealed to us in another post that they made 30 thousand dollars last year. I wouldn't work for that. They enjoy it, so they do it.
If you want to make money, I suggest you learn how to be a Top Tier Driver. There's no secret to making money as a trucker. Most people just aren't willing to put in the work. Buying a truck is the last suggestion I would give as how to make money as a truck driver.
An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.
Why bother buying a truck when you can drive a company truck for free? I understand that you keep more in profit when you own it, but you also spend much more to keep it legal and running, so the grand total is approximately the same.

I drove a truck back in the 90s. I left the road and pursued a career in the Electrical field. But I love driving truck, always have. I went back to driving truck for Melton 2 years ago, I only drove for a few months, and the bottom fell out of the market and paychecks went to near nothing. So back to Electrical I went. I'm tired of working for somebody else making them tons of money, while get a sliver. So my question is with the old experience I have back in the 90s, and the few months of the newer (in 2019), experience driving, am I going to have issues finding an insurance carrier if I buy my own truck and run under my own authority?
