Starting this thread to keep my journey in, until it is diary time.

As of the time of writing, shuffling some things around. Appointments had to move out some, due to my truck in the shop and finally getting really great health insurance. Doc and DOT will now be way cheaper. This is my biggie, as I don't know what all needs to be done for me to get the A-OK. And now it won't matter--as however they want to poke and prod me, it won't cost an arm and a leg. Time--I got.

My laminator is on the way--for that pretrip inspection sheet. Going to Kinko's as soon as I get my pickup back--unless...they pack and ship. Must have those TT guides bound. 👍 As appts slide out, High Road Training now moves all the way to the top. 🚛

For those who haven't seen my other thread; my timing is April / May to have the CDL and be out with a trainer. Still poking through all the training options, and gathering info for the prehires.

List of desirable companies so far: Swift, LTI, Wilson Logistics, Prime, FedEx Ground (I'm a night owl--linehaul would be perfect). Looks like Prime has a training facility in Salt Lake. Is that right? NICE facility. What is a Floral? Is that a terminal(Floral division)?

Will love more names of companies running in the PNW, with PATIENT training programs for girls terrified of backing big trucks. I'm hitting the reviews in here again--but you folks have personal experience.... so please add your 2-cents about PATIENT companies who train.

And now I must study....

Lil'Red

Yes, I expect to see the big, bad wolf--and to get to Grandma's house. rofl-3.gif

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Linehaul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Prehire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Yes, Prime has the Salt Lake training terminal. My younger friend that is mentally challenged is in school there right now. Yes they work with you on backing. He drove probably 2 years about 18 years ago and did not retain the backing knowledge or even hours of service and other truck related info. He's progressing through with help.

That's great Laura. :) I didn't say and should have--I don't care about the location of the training center. East coast, Missouri, whatever. I could see they had a huge terminal there, and it looked very well equipped--I just missed the location of the center on their school page. dancing-banana.gif

I probably should wear my GOOD glasses the next time.

Laura, your friend, is he on this forum? I know we have a ton of Prime folks in here, but he's training NOW--so hearing from him would be awesome. In case he's worried about coming on here, pretty sure this is a safe place if a person don't spell perfectly or have the written vocabulary of Shakespeare.

So--Question, how do you tag somebody on here? Can you?

All the best, drive safe Laura!

Lil'Red.

Generally those that want to be contacted will post their email, FB, or text number on their Bio page information.

No instant messaging or direct email is available on TT.

Check out the search bar at the top of the page for posts and blogs by "Trucking With Kearsey". I think she has a large following group on YouTube.

Lil'RedRidingHood, have you checked Roehl? It is a good company to start. One of many, of course, but I think it is the only company that puts students into its own hotel (in Marshfield, WI), which has a heated outdoor pool and a sauna!

Thank you. 😊 I should have expressed myself better. I was not trying to contact anyone off-platform, or send a PM--which is not available here. Or wasn't trying to bother anyone in general. I was trying to find out if it was possible to tag someone in a discussion. If it is not, that is fine. Just trying to learn how tagging works here, if available. Other platforms generally are '@username'. It's going to depend on the underlying programming.

Andrey, thanks so much! I will add Roehl to my list of companies to research. Appreciate it! thank-you-2.gif

Hotel with a sauna sounds heavenly.

Hay Nina!!

Here's how: Use 'quote' instead of 'start new reply,' when replying to somebody else's thread. They will be notified of your response. For instance, say you find a thread by a guy named "PackRat" that you REALLY like, and want more info from him, regarding such... Go to his original post, and click 'quote.' Don't just start new reply, although that works, as well... for the O/P anyway.

Even though others may have replied, "QUOTE" his original post in the thread, and .. he will get an alert!

You can actually ALSO do this, to 'responders' to any post. Just 'quote' the poster of the post (in anyone's thread) . . . and they will be notified. The 'quote' feature is your friend!!

Kinda like I did here, for you~!!!

Hope that helps, m'lady!!!

~ Anne ~

ps: It doesn't hurt learning a lil' HTML, so you can 'checkmark' stuff like the mods... it's do'able! Colors won't work; I tried.
