Welcome Bill!
So, just how "new to trucking" are you? Who are you driving for and how long have you been at it. There's no simple answer to your question without some better information. We've got a longtime friend in here who recently shared his numbers with us. He's a contractor, and while he grossed over $300,000, he netted less than many good solid company drivers do.
You may just need more experience so you can learn how to make money at this. It takes some time and effort to get good at trucking. Just switching to being a contractor is not necessarily a smart move.
Give us some more information and we will be glad to help.
Bill I agree with OS’s comments. No easy answer. Alot depends on your location as well as what you are looking for. Those are the two easiest questions they get harder after you answer those. Loadboards can be a source to freight, but those loads are all going to be through brokers. Brokers are not all the same. Also if you have a new authority many brokers will not deal with you.
I have always been contracted until recently. It was ok and I made money at it. Not all companies that contract trucks are the same either. You really have to look hard at what they offer and what their cut is. Either way can be very time consuming figuring out which way is best for you. We are all different, and not every company or broker is a good fit for us individually.
Ask some more specific questions and we can provide more specific better answers.
I regularly talk to fellow drivers. Not as much as I would like, but enough to know that being a company driver is a much better choice than being a O/0 or lease operator.
