Hey everyone, I'm not sure how to write this out but I just started working for a mega company in March and I just quit 2 days ago cause it was horrible I felt undertrained and when I brought up problems to my jobs mechanic on the truck they would say eh ull be fine... when it's not fine cause it's leaking power steering fluid anyway I ended up leaving the company and just going to take care of some things and apply for some companies in a few months will this be a issue? I don't mind paying for a refresher course

Since you felt undertrained, I'm assuming you have no experience.

You quit because the truck was leaking power steering fluid? I'm having a hard time believing that.

Yes this will be an issue. You have no experience and in a few months your license may be considered stale.

It's an employers market. That driver shortage stuff is nonsense. Owner operators are parking their equipment and taking company positions, companies are shutting down leaving experienced drivers available and you've already proven yourself to be unreliable.

Do you have a contract with this carrier? If so, that makes it even more of an issue.

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

Yes you've really handled things badly. Your word is no good ( you had some type of contract) and you owe for your training! A refresher course will not be available for you@ you have no experience!

Now was not the time to quit. Truck driving Jobs are becoming increasingly harder to find due to the shape of the economy. Who knows how things are going to look like in a few months.

Don’t just assume you’re going to be eligible for a refresher course when you quit after a month.

I read your post in the ladies forum. The advice given to you here is very valid. However, they do not know about your anxiety attacks for driving at night. I believe you need to talk to your mega company and try to get released for medical and go get some help with that. You need to get that under control because a lot of driving is done at night.

Even if you quit for this medical issue, you will be unhireable in the future. However, if you are released for medical that company may take you back once you are cleared to drive.

What you are feeling about lack of training is what all new drivers feel....it's not anything new. Experience comes with actually driving. Most all the larger companies have their own way of training but in reality it's all very similar. So I would go back to them. Talk to them of your panic attacks and you need to get help for that. See if they will take you back but put you on medical leave until you get it taken care of. Then when the doctor clears you, you have a job to go to. Otherwise you may not end up getting hired and getting the experience you need. It's a very tough market right now and will be through the end of the year or longer is what is being predicted.

Okay so I had 2 weeks of training but only in my home town, my account was dedicated to Pennsylvania and some other states, for the last week of training 3rd week, I was in a 28ft trailer in a day cab... when I'm suppose to be driving a 53 ft w/ sleeper to a few different states not just Pennsylvania, we drive automatic but we do have the choice of the fake manual, I asked my trainer how do u use the manual? He said u don't need to use it... and I'm like okay 😐 then he shows me cruise control and how it controls ur speed, but u can't use that if it's snowing or raining, I also asked how do u use the jake... he wouldn't show me, then because of us driving a 28ft trailer in Chicago, I wasn't shown how to slide my tandems so I told them.. I felt undertrained they said okay.. well" go get ur truck and we'll train u more so i wait 4 days to get my truck finally I get it and have no experience in it, it's a newer truck, the ones I drove in were old, there was alot more to this, but yeah I keep getting alot of maybe from my job, and to many people lieing to me, the ground was being held by magic "maybe" being employed with them, and no I didn't get my license with them, I went to a community College for it, and the reason why I said refresher was because one company did call me in March after starting with my mega company asking if I would apply with them.. and I said yeah but I haven't drove in 4 months guy says "that's okay we only require 48 hour refresher

We need a lot more details and background from you before we can point you in the correct direction.

Day Cab:

A tractor which does not have a sleeper berth attached to it. Normally used for local routes where drivers go home every night.

Tandems:

Tandem Axles

A set of axles spaced close together, legally defined as more than 40 and less than 96 inches apart by the USDOT. Drivers tend to refer to the tandem axles on their trailer as just "tandems". You might hear a driver say, "I'm 400 pounds overweight on my tandems", referring to his trailer tandems, not his tractor tandems. Tractor tandems are generally just referred to as "drives" which is short for "drive axles".

So I can't just pay it myself and get a refresher? Threw the school I went to?

You can, but it doesn't guarantee anything.

Like Bird told you, things are rough out here and they're only going to get worse. That means companies are going to do more to control their risks and look towards more experienced drivers with a cleaner work history.

Is the company you contacted in May willing to train you the way you want to be trained? You said you weren't ready to be on your own with your first company because they didn't train you enough, what's different after 5 months of no practice coupled with no experience? Are they going to allow to drive only during the day? I went to the ladies section after Laura brought it up and your experiences aren't good. That's something you need to address.

To put this in perspective for you, you're a candidate that left your previous employer after a month, your CDL is stale, you have no experience and you can't drive at night. A refresher isn't going to solve all of that.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Your acting as if I have a DUI or something on my driving record lol?

I quit in order to prevent anything going on my driving record, I refuse to drive under trained and unaware of how to use my manual and jake, I refuse to drive with my power steering reservoir leaking and my steering wheel making noises as I turn... and a mechanic putting it on a back burner as if it's nothing cause it's not... 80,000 can kill a family

But yeah let's just blame me and not the company who brushed it off over and over again.
