Stupid questions incoming. But I need some help from my current hazmat holders. I've been looking at the different endorsements to get, and I want to get tanker, and hazmat. Im seeing that I need an H endorsement, and a N for tankers. However whats tripping me up is this X endorsement. Does it mean I don't have to take the tanker or hazmat tests? Can I just apply and test for that one separately? Or am I going to have to get each endorsement separately.

I'm looking to move to Florida in the next year, and they don't except out of state hazmat, so I'm going to wait to get it. I'll be moving in the next year so it'd be pointless. But if there are other endorsements I can get now to save time I want to do that.

Also, renewing cdl. I live in IL (Yay...sarcastically) I just got my CDL last week. My actual drivers license expires in august. That means my cdl will expire too right? So when I go to renew my license, do I tell them I want to renew my cdl as well? Or is there a different process for that?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

If you have a tankers enforcement you have an "N", if you have hazmat you have an "H".

If you take both tests and pass them you have an x. It's just a system that reduces the amount of letters on the bank of your license and since the two almost always go together, it's easier to code.

You should only have 1 license. You shouldn't have a regular license and a CDL. The expiration date is the one on your license.

Are you already employed with a CDL? The reason I ask is a lot of Florida is a dead zone both for hiring and for freight coming out of the state.

Yeah, if you tested and received your CDL then it replaces your prior license. Did you take a class in ELDT (Entry Level Driver Training) when you originally got your CDL? If not then you may need to take it before you can add endorsements.

And (just my personal opinion) making an H and T endorsement equal to an X endorsement to save letters seems to be one of those stupid laws that someone just made up. Like the need to take the ELDT to add endorsements, I just can't imagine any driver saying: "I'm sure glad I took that ELDT course, I would have been in real trouble without that informative training!"

Finally: The background check takes two months so make sure you get that done a few months before you go for the hazmat test.

Good luck!

Scott
