I've had a question for some time and will bring it up now. At Marten, Michael has his truck inspected at the Jurupa terminal monthly. He gets his manager to book him an appointment and he gets routed so that it fits into his schedule. I would imagine that they would have caught a problem like this before the tire got this bad. I don't recall ever reading of anyone mentioning monthly inspections and wonder if it is unique to Marten or to his regional fleet.

Hello Harvey. The program Marten has in place sounds like a good one. Helwig might be too lax about getting the trucks in for inspection and maintenance. I don’t get routed back to the terminal very often, which has surprised me.

I think that I will now get brought back in because the truck is due for a PM and I have several small issues to get worked on. Plus I picked up a stone chip on the windshield, so this will be my second windshield replacement.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

Here is what has happened so far.

I was sent to the Paulsboro, NJ, TA and waited 8 hours to get in the shop. They only have one technician on duty and he only does tire changes. Got a new Goodyear tire installed. The company is routing me back to our shop to check on wheel balance and to do a three axle alignment.

Had this happen twice each time around the 65k mark. Have a tire bank 3 miles from my drop yard. I guess thats one good thing about schneider you can just show up at any tire bank without needing approval. The guy said it was an alignment issue. I guess Schneider doesnt care to do that.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

So, I posted about my Frightliner developing a noticeable front end shimmy.

Yesterday, I got it into our shop to have it inspected and the steer wheels balanced. After one day of driving it today, I have to say that getting it in the shop made a huge difference.

Yeah, now it’s much worse. Most of the time when I hold the steering wheel I think I have Parkinson’s Disease.

Something is not right. Since I won’t be back to our shop for a while, I think I will call this in and see if they will get me into a shop on the road to have this evaluated.

Any suggestions about how I should deal with this? I can’t see anything obviously wrong from my own inspection, but it really bugs me to drive it with this shaking going on.

Definitely get it into the shop right away. Trust your gut on this especially with it getting worse after taking it to the shop already. It could be anything from a bad part to loose bolts

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
