Bicycles On Trucks

This is something I have been thinking about but haven’t implemented. For several reasons, I need to carry a bicycle with me on my truck. I have looked at folding bikes but they won’t work for me to store one inside the tractor. Plus they are expensive as heck. I need one that I can secure to the back of the cab. And I can’t get a shorty. I need one that is medium size at a minimum.

Does anyone carry a bike with them? What recommendations would you have about trucks + bikes?

I have heard & seen photos of bikes tied to the back of the cab. There's very little room, though because you need the space for the trailer to make turns. If your truck has a cow catcher, there's your tie-down point! Here's a Trucking Truth discussion of a few years ago: Bringing a Bike on the Road

BK, what about the passenger seat? A lot of the newer bikes have a front wheel that is designed to come off quickly and go back on the same way.

Are you thinking about a bike to help get some exercise without taxing your knees?

I used to do it. I finally resorted to taking one of the wheels off (bikes with quick release wheels work best) and putting in the top bunk. Used to keep it on the back of the cab but you got to be careful that the handlebar end isn’t pushing up against the back of the cab. I learned that lesson the hard way when the vibrations caused the handlebar end to bore a small hole in the back of the cab

Yes, I have been looking at bikes with the quick attach front wheel that also fold. That might work in the passenger seat but has some disadvantages, so I’m still working on the plan to put one behind the cab. Errol’s idea to put it on the cow catcher is a great suggestion, unfortunately I don’t have a cow catcher on my truck.

There are two reasons I could really use a bike on the road. As you said, exercise is one because walking is difficult for me but my doctor recommends finding a bike for exercise. The other reason is somewhat related. At times, I need to get somewhere but can’t park my truck near enough. Occasionally, I even get a dock door soooooo far away from the S&R office that I would use a bike if I had one with me. As my luck would have it, I frequently get a dock door that is the farthest from the office. There should be handicap dock spaces, lol.

Anyway, I’m still looking at bikes. When I find the right one, I think our shop will help me figure out the best way to secure it to the truck.

How about a scooter instead?

I saw one of the company drivers bust out a scooter from his truck and one footed back to his home near the docking area while they were loading.
