I have 4 DWI’s in my past last one being almost 16 years ago. I was thinking of going into trucking are there any schools that will train and hire in the US. Does anyone out there have any experience with this?

Most likely you won't get a job in trucking.

Many companies have a "lifetime limit" of one or two DUIs. 4 is excessive in this industry and demonstrates poor judgment and lack of control. I am glad you worked through your issues, but especially in this market,.... this will not be overlooked.

There are many drivers with absolutely nothing on their records having trouble changing companies. This is a huge hurdle. Sorry.

Do NOT pay for a CDL school. They will lie and take your money and you wont find a job after.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Your only way to find out for sure is to apply everywhere and see if anyone is willing to give you a shot.

Do NOT go spend money at a private school, because as said that is just wasting your money and time. A CDL is only good if you can find a job.

You will no doubt have to settle for a less than desirable company. All companies set their own threshold in areas like this, so a standard answer is impossible to give. For smaller companies, that are not self insured it comes down to what their insurance company is willing to do.

I would keep my eyes open.

Somewhere on the internet there's a list of companies and their DUI policies. Some will say "no dui's within the last 10 years, no more than two in a lifetime". Others might say "no dui's within the last 5 years" and have no mention of a lifetime limit.

Someone else had replied that paying for your own school would be a bad idea. I fully agree. There would be nothing worse than finishing school, owing money, but not being able to do the job you trained for.

I also read on a completely different thread -- no matter what, tell the truth and ONLY the truth they're asking for. Don't lie, but don't give them any discriminating information they haven't asked for. If they ask you if you have ever had your license suspended or revoked, be honest and tell them. If they're only asking if you've had a DUI in the last 5 years, you can honestly say no.

Don't hide anything, but don't volunteer anything they haven't explicitly asked for either.
