Will Mandatory Remote Class Interfere With Getting CDL?

I am seriously considering getting my CDL through paid training. The problem is, I have to attend a mandatory online class for a misdemeanor Monday evenings and I am concerned this will conflict with any of the paid CDL training processes. From what I’ve seen the classroom training is over by the time my class starts; it’s the driving part of the training (and my first few months of ‘real’ driving)!that worries me. How much of a problem will this be?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I forget to say- it’s a zoom class and I can take the class over my smartphone

How long are you committed to the class? It seems like you should get this behind you first. Then you'll be unencumbered for your training.

At prime this would be impossible even during the "school" part. Just wait and get it out. Then go to trucking companies that train, not a cdl school.

Until the end of June. The problem is that I am only working part time and I am approaching being flat broke and unable to pay my bills. I want to do this as a career change and I don’t feel like I have time to wait

Phillip, you’re not thinking this through. You have money problems but you plan on paying for a private school? You can save the money AND get paid by getting accepted to a company sponsored program.

As was said, you should get your zoom work done first. As for money, why are you just working part time? Can you get a full time job or another part time job in the interim?

What I meant by paid CDL training was that they pay you while you are training, like Schneider or Roehl. But it seems like the class issue is going to stop me from getting it for now anyway.

You are thinking "class" as in schedule. Some "class" time is actually delivering the load... so 24/7 you live in the truck and pick up and deliver around the clock, just the same as a solo driver. There is no set time or class. You may pick up a load at 10 am and deliver it at 8pm. Then pick up at 6am and deliver at noon. There is no way to set time apart for your schedule.
