Good evening! So, recently I’ve been hearing rumors, that everyone going through their GYCDL program and new trainee’s, are required to be team drivers now. Does anyone have any official information on this actually taking place? Or is it just rumors. I’m not against team driving, but would definitely prefer the solo route (I know their TNT is technically team driving, but it’s only for training). Any insight on this would be extremely helpful as I was originally going to choose them or Roehl to start my career. Thank you all!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

TNT:

Trainer-N-Trainee

Prime Inc has their own CDL training program and it's divided into two phases - PSD and TNT.

The PSD (Prime Student Driver) phase is where you'll get your permit and then go on the road for 10,000 miles with a trainer. When you come back you'll get your CDL license and enter the TNT phase.

The TNT phase is the second phase of training where you'll go on the road with an experienced driver for 30,000 miles of team driving. You'll receive 14¢ per mile ($700 per week guaranteed) during this phase. Once you're finished with TNT training you will be assigned a truck to run solo.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

I don't know all the details perfectly, but yes Prime is essentially eliminating solo company drivers. Last I knew, you were forced to either go team with another company driver, or be put on a waiting list for the very few available solo driver positions.

Our very own Kearsey is the resident Prime expert. I'm sure she'll be along sometime soon to answer your question in more detail. Meanwhile you can visit her YouTube channel, where you'll find info on this subject and many others. I know she has a video on this specific topic, but I'm not sure which one it is. Check it out.

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Thank you for the info, I found the video! I think for me, and what would fit best would be Roehl at this point. Sounds like there’s multiple changes across the board for many companies coming along. I look forward to being out on the road soon enough! Also, I enjoy a lot of your videos on Walmart and your experiences, thanks for sharing with all of us!

Hi and thanks Turtle.

Yes, Prime dispatch told us all team only for newbies.... and then the head of reefer division clarified recently that it was supposed to be temporary and "due to equipment and slot availability". I do not kmow of it was miscommunication or of they decided against it due to a backlash.

They have since started upgrading to solo again. I didn't want to announce it until I knew for sure.

At the 53:00 mark of this video, you can hear the Director of Reefer Division say it himself.
