Hi everyone! I just joined Swift Academy and I just finished my second day of academy!

I know hiring is not guranteed, but what is the chance of Swift not hiring me after graduationg their School?

I dont have any records and I did pass all my drug test, DOT physical...etc.

Also, has anybody done top gun program in Swift? I wonder how that works. Such as if lodging is covered or how much the students are getting paid during top gun program... things like that.

Also anybody know if Swift really pays 300$ for orientation?? I saw it in the following link:https://www.reddit.com/r/Truckers/comments/1hubqpz/swift_is_out_of_touch_with_orientation_and/

But I havent really found anything related in Swift's official website

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

They've already approved you. That's why you're in their school. You're hired after you graduate. As long as you follow their rules and don't conduct yourself like an A-hole while in school, you've got the job.

Our member Davy went through it. You really should go through it. That's an excellent training program. I highly recommend it. I'm sorry I don't know the details about lodging and expenses. Hopefully, Davy or someone who has done it will see this.

Again, I don't know this answer, but one thing successful truckers do is be their own advocate. That's a simple question your recruiter or a teacher in the academy can answer. Go ahead and ask them.

I have not participated in this program, but from what I recall reading a while back, you stay in a truck parked at the terminal during Top Gun. As Old School mentions, perhaps Davy (or someone else) can confirm that.

I can confirm that they do indeed give the orientation pay after you are onboarded through orientation.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

There's a section of my cdl diary that details top gun. I went through it at Knight, one of the first classes, it was still being developed.

I cant recommend it enough. Its a week on a closed course doing close quarters maneuvering, real life backing and safety drills. You live in your truck on campus, so you really get a feel for what its like.

Search Knight in cdl diaries, its in there.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
