I am trying to link/meet some employees from Knight Transportation. I am from FL and they are the only company sponsored cdl training program that has a terminal in FL.. So I am fixing to apply and I would like to have opinions from people close to the company on the company.. Thanks for your time

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Hey Karl, first of all welcome to the site. I'll tell you right off that if you have any large gaps in your employment they won't take you. I was offered my dream job with them last week and then they noticed I'd been out of work for the past 6 yrs. on disability, for my back. They yanked the offer and said they do not hire with voids. There are guys on here that work for them, I'm sure someone will chime in. If you go to the top of the this sites page and put Knight in the search box it will bring up info that has been discussed. Best of luck to you, MRCgood-luck.gif

Appreciate the input...

I have been a stay home dad for 8 years since I got out of the military, my wife has a good job but works many hours and we both wanted our kids in the early years "hands on" by one of us.. So now my youngest daughter is in middle school I want to get my own career underway.. I acquired my cdl permit early this month and my job history is destroying my chances at a career in this industry, I dont know what to do..

Hi Karl, welcome to Trucking Truth !

I started with Knight in February. I work out of the Lakeland Terminal and after a bit of a slow start due to trainer shortages am very happy working for them.

I retired from a career in Utilities industry and went to Knight the week after I retired. I went through the application process and had a start date with them a couple months prior to leaving my job so I had no employment gap.

The best advice I can give you is to call Kristie Miller and explain your situation and see if she can help. Kristie is the recruiter for the training program for the south east region. I know you can sometimes provide a letter explaining what you were doing during periods of unemployment or self employment.

As I understand it they mainly need to be able to account for your whereabouts more than anything. I would definitely call first before you complete an application so you dont get turned down before you get a chance to explain your situation. If you get turned down you have to wait 6 months I believe before you can apply again. Be completely honest and see if Kristie can help. Feel free to PM me with any questions you might have and I will do my best to answer them for you. I stay pretty busy so it may take a day or two to get back to you but I will good-luck.gif

The recruiter I spoke to said that," They have a problem with large voids due to people falling into habits," I explained that it took 5 years to find a Dr. that actually wanted to take the "RISK" of operating on me (most surgeons want a guaranteed outcome, to keep their stats up and it makes the Hospital look better, which gives them a bigger bonus ) sorry I digress. He stated that it has become their policy due to multiple cases and that I wouldn't pass underwriting. wtf.gif I'm glad that I had already filled out the app online and had it waiting to be sent. They had me in school for a week (refresher) then out on the road for 4 weeks, into my own truck and a NE regional , Sunday thru Thursday! SSHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!t Hey, sorry didn't mean to go off. I wish you all the luck in the world! I'll keep watching for updates on your progress. Shiny Side Up!smile.gif

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
