Serious answer, Company sponsored schools. Probably not, when I went through training there was one person that didn't know how to drive a manual and they just threw him in the truck and with no explanation on what to do and they said drive. No joke, the trainer drove out to the country and then said who's 1st. Lol! It was quite the adventure. No previous instructions at all, they would tell you what to do as you go and then after awhile it was the next persons turn. They will only teach you enough to pass the road test and then from there they send you off and on you way to your training truck for OTR experience. Now remember you only get few days of driving thats it. I'm sure there are other companies out there that aren't as progressive but CR England was not one of them.

Let's hope you get a very patient trainer. :)

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

When I was looking at going to a private school the instructors I talked to said it is easier to teach someone how to double clutch if they had never driven a manual transmission. Seems those of us that can drive a stick shift assume it will be the same and it isn't from what I have been told. I guess I will find out soon enough!!! smile.gif

Double Clutch:

To engage and then disengage the clutch twice for every gear change.

When double clutching you will push in the clutch, take the gearshift out of gear, release the clutch, press the clutch in again, shift the gearshift into the next gear, then release the clutch.

This is done on standard transmissions which do not have synchronizers in them, like those found in almost all Class A trucks.

Them private schools have more patience and will most likely teach you how to properly drive before passing you on your road test. I'm almost certain they grade your shifting but these company sponsored ones seem to not care much. From my experience anyways.

I went through Roehl 's company school. They were very patient. And I can tell you from experience it is easier to teach someone who has never drove a stick to double clutch. The biggest obstacle is people that have drove manuals in cars and pickups are so used to pressing the clutch all the way and muscle memory takes over. Just my 2 cents.

Don`t let that kind of talk get in your head. I find it hard to believe that teaching someone who already possesses the coordination required to drive a stick is more difficult to teach how to push in the clutch, put stick in neutral position, let out the clutch, rev if necessary, push in the clutch then slide into next gear. Muscle memory will make us standard drivers want to put it straight into gear on the first clutch press, but, that will get fixed asap. We already get the concept.
