I'm tired of people who've never drive a big rig before telling me I shouldn't enter into the trucking industry because its dangerous. Every job is dangerous! I've been working at a steel pipe plant where 2 guys just died the other day from an explosion, at UPS warehouse in my hometown a guy got fired Monday so he showed up yesterday and killed two of his supervisor's then killed himself, at a hotel not far from it on the same day a a janitor fired his employee and the guy came back up there and killed him, a couple of weeks ago in Chicago robbers shot and killed 3 KFC workers, and besides the explosion please don't let me remind you of how many limbs I've seen get taken at the pipe plant I was at! I know the trucking industry requires a great deal of safety but just like every hazardous job if you do it correctly, respect it, and obey all rules, I'm sure those type of things are minimized.

They probably just watched some scary trucker movies recently. Duel and Joy Ride come to mind.

About a year ago I was at Cabela's looking at mosin nagant's when this guy came up to me and scoffed at the price of them (150 each). He made me think I was an idiot for considering it for that price. He mentioned how in __________ California, where he lives, they are going for 89 dollars at the Big 5 sporting goods store, and how you can get a new unissued Russian SKS for 150 dollars at the gun store in the same location. So I called those places up, and guess what? 150 for a mosin at the big 5, and no Russian SKS's going for 150. (These sell for 400 up to 600 these days) Short story shorter, this was the day I woke up to what a narcissist actually is. Some people exist just to **** you off. They sleep really well knowing that you've lost your job or failed at achieving something.

I get a huge kick out of this kind of thing. If you passed me on the street, "trucker" would be your absolute last guess. I like breaking the mold, looking like a girl, and driving big rigs. The best reaction I got was when my best friend from way back home told her mom what I do ..."Get OUT! That is awesome!"

You go right ahead and break all the rules that everyone else has set for you, in their own minds, DeJuan! Be your own man and enjoy the twisted look on everyone's face when you tell them what you're go-ing to do. And then go out and do it. Do it better than anyone. You know you're doing what you want when you get all those weird reactions and objections. By being true to yourself, you're setting others off balance because their reaction is about them. They're questioning their own lack of insight while they watch you follow yours. That's scary for them! Take their silly reactions as an affirmation that you are being true to yourself.

I love running my ideas by other people because you're almost certainly going to get a long list of reasons not to do something. As nice as it would be to get encouragement, the reality is you have to be able to make sense out of doing something. If you can't respond to the critics in a way that satisfies you then you know you're considering a bad idea.

And for everyone out there keep something in mind....people in general do not like to see others have success unless the person in question is your mom or they themselves have had a lot of success in their lifetime. So you might expect that coming up with a grand vision for your life would be met with respect and enthusiasm, but rarely is that the case. More often than not if you dream big your ideas (and at times your progress) are going to be stomped upon by those who fear you're going to make them look or feel bad. Everyone wants success. Everyone wants to live their dream life. But the reality is that very, very few people are willing to put in the work or take the risk to make it happen. So they settle for far less than they're capable of. It's not hard to imagine that the last thing those people want to see is someone else willing to work harder and take more risk to get somewhere in life.

So choose your own path in life but make sure you've thought it out well first. Give the naysayers the opportunity to question your ideas but ultimately make your own choices.

Unrealistic expectations have ended many, many budding truck driving careers (not to mention lotsa marriages!). So, just make certain that your expectations are in line with the reality of life as a trucker and you should be fine. Thank others for their well-intended advice, smile, and keep on trucking!
