I just moved here to Ohio from AZ about 2 months ago. I'm going to the DMV on Monday to transfer my CDL and endorsements. I should have taken care of this 30 days upon moving here but I had to set up other things. This is the first time I am transferring a CDL from a different state.

Are their penalties for transferring a CDL after 60 days? Do I have to re-take the CDL test? Go back to school to trucking school, etc?

Any Ohioans familiar with CDL transfers?

Thanks.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Hi TW, I am from Ohio but probably won't be a lot of help. However, I am going to school in Wisconsin and will get my license there and then transfer it back to Ohio. When I got my permit I think they said I would have to take the general knowledge test again when I transferred it back and the tests for the endorsements. I'm not positive though as I am a little overwhelmed with information right now! So what part of Ohio did you move to, north, central, or south? I am in the greater Cincinnati area and have lived here for over 25 years. Strangely enough, all of my children have more to AZ in the last couple of years! Anyway, I hope someone will be able to give you better answers, especially about the time lag!

I don't think the 60 days will be an issue of any sort.

As far as what it takes to transfer, that varies from state to state. It could be just a few minutes of paperwork, you might have to take some tests again, or you might have to take all of the testing again from scratch (Illinois requires that). So you'll have to contact the Motor Vehicle Department to find out what they'll require you to do.

Unless you tell them they aren't going to know, if you had been stopped that would be different. One standardized set of tests, rules and license was the premise behind the CDL , then they decided that the states could have their piece of the pie. Each state runs with its own set of rules! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$wtf-2.gif

I've transferred from AZ to CA and CA to MO..

AZ to CA was a set of tests, all three actually.. No drive

CA to MO was nothing but filling out an app and doing a road sign test.

It verrys between state. CA is one of the pickiest. But I think you'll probably just do a paper test and be on your way.. I'd go through our High Road Training Program

Just in case to refresh your memory..

You can call DMV and ask. Just do a google search for Ohio DMV and there site should have a main number that you can call. That's what I did with MO.

Its funny.. with all the negativity out there bashing company's. . They won't get you home.. there bottom feeders. . I was fired for a parking ticket.. the ripped me off.. ruined my credit so on so on. However I did not hear gripes about transferring CDL to home state or I had to test twice or pay twice. Strange because they over exaggerated everything else.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
