Well its been two weeks already since I started school. So far it's been a great experience. With the exception of a couple hours in the yard doing drop and hook drills, most of the time has been spent in the classroom. CDL Manual and videos. Loooong days in class then home to eat, read, and sleep.

I'm in a small class of guys and guess what...I'm the old man of the group! Go figure. Good thing is, the other guys are serious minded about the program and learning the ropes which makes for a MUCH better time of it. And getting a jump start here on TT with the testing, etc, has been a huge help.

Tomorrow I'm heading to the DMV to take the permit test tomorrow and I'm going to go after all the endorsements (doubles/triples, tanker, hazmat) with the exception of metal coils.

Best wishes to everyone on here for a happy and healty...and PROSPEROUS 2015!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Drop And Hook:

Drop and hook means the driver will drop one trailer and hook to another one.

In order to speed up the pickup and delivery process a driver may be instructed to drop their empty trailer and hook to one that is already loaded, or drop their loaded trailer and hook to one that is already empty. That way the driver will not have to wait for a trailer to be loaded or unloaded.

CDL permit in hand. Spent a little over an hour at the dmv yesterday. Passed Gen. Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination. Had one wrong answer on the Combination section. Decided to take the Hazmat , Doubles/Triples, and Tanker endorsement tests while I was there. One wrong answer on the Tanker test but aced everything else.

Decided to take the Metal Coils endorsement test on Monday while the rest of the class is taking their permit tests. ( Friday was a day off so I went over on my own). May not ever do flatbed BUT...you never know.

We are supposed to start spending more time in the yard this coming week. All we've done out there so far is some drop/hook practice. Moving along just fine though. Would be nice if the temperature would go up about 10 degrees or so...lol

Great job! I feel your pain on the temperature thing. The bulk of my outdoor time was in January and February. Our instructors set up a straight truck outside and kept it running for us to jump into and get warm. Good luck to you sir I'm sure you'll do great!

How old is old? I'm 48 and I am betting I'll be one of the oldest taking the course.
