So, can anyone give me any advice on the best road atlas I'll be needing to navigate this great country? I'm just a newbie and I certainly don't want to be a lost newbie. Nothing fancy, just the basics. Thanks. Let them truckers roll. 10 4

I got the Rand McNally deluxe motor carriers road atlas with the laminated pages. My advice to you is definitely get the laminated pages to protect from spills and rips, etc. This is my first truckers atlas I've ever used and I love it, it has everything I need.

It's the 2014 edition I got last year for $40. I saw some atlases at Love's that were on sale.

Also, get you a pocket truck stop guide or use an app like truckerspath so you can plan your day/breaks/stops...

I would also suggest using google maps as well so you can get an idea of towns and shipper layouts so you won't be completely guessing upon arriving there.

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

Excellent choice, plus you can use a dry erase marker to highlight your route, then erase it once you're done.

Don't spend $40-60 on an atlas, though. Yes the laminated style is worth it. Helpful hint: use wet erase for semi-permanent things: terminals, favorite truck stops, etc., and the dry erase for your current route notes.

Go to Abe Books and search on "Rand McNally Deluxe Motor Carriers' Road Atlas". You can get a 2013 atlas for about $25 delivered.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Great ideas (using markers by the way). But for me, because things change so much (example - TN 840 around Nashville is completed, does not show as such on 2013 atlas), just not worth trying to save $20 and then having out of date information. This could be very costly to your wallet (tickets, fines, etc). So in the end, trying to save $20 could cost you several hundred $$$$.

Just my .02 cents on this.

You're speaking to a cheapskate, Ernie, no offense taken. I got a 2011 this way last December. $20! The roads they are a'changin' fer sure. No road issues yet!

I just bought my 2015 Rand McNally Deluxe Road Carriers Atlas (spiral bound and laminated) at Petro in Hammond, Louisiana for $19.95 (after $10 mail-in rebate). It is truly awesome. I love maps!

I agree with Ernie. Get an updated atlas. The laminated Rand is nice, besides being able to use the erasable markers, it'll last longer. Supplement the hard copy with Google Maps / Google Earth, and a trucker GPS. All great tools to have.
