Driving for Prime (enjoy every day) in the Tanker Division and worked real hard last night. Drove from Newark, NJ and headed Northwest towards Chicago. The tanker was not full and that forward surge was rough last night, did a lot of climbing and just could not get in a smooth transition of driving. Every time i down shifted and felt like some one hit the back of the truck with a sleg hammer. Its nice driving empty...its all good.

Yeah I drove a food grade tanker for a year one time. It was an awesome job but the surge was really rough. There were many times I had to hit the brakes harder than I wanted to and the surge would hit so hard it would literally knock the hat off my head and knock everything off my shelves onto the floor. Looked like a hurricane came through the cab.

The worst thing we had to haul was salt water. It was extremely dense and yet still maintained the viscosity of water. You could barely fill the tank halfway and you were grossing 79,000. My God was it violent if that surged hard on you. Sometimes I thought it was going to rip the kingpin right off the trailer.

dancing.gifdancing.gifdancing.gif Been there, done that, it's tuff on a rookie Driver, but in the long run, you end up being one of the smoothest Drivers out there.

I got the tiniest taste of the surge effect when I hauled some 4000 lb containers of paint. I was surprised how much it rocked the truck back and forth after coming to a stop, and for how long. I'm sure that doesn't even come close to the effect a smoothbore tanker has though!
