Is Pre-Trip inspection part of the "learner's permit" test or does that only come later on the actual cdl license test ?

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

In Illinois, it's part of the cdl license test. Pretrip, skills and road. I'm sure it's the same in Missouri

The permit test, the one you study with the High Road Training Program, is the multiple choice test.

Pre-trip is part of the skills test which is the on-the-road test, the final test you take to get your actual CDL license.

There will be some questions about the pre-trip inspection on the written exam you'll take to get your CDL permit.

You will then do an actual pre-trip inspection on a truck as part of the skills test to get your CDL.

For my permit exam at Prime I had to take 3 different written tests: Air brakes Combination vehicles Tanker The pretrip itself is during the actual CDL License exam.

And I tried to put each item on the permit test on a different line. Didn't know it would look like I forgot punctuation when I submitted the reply!

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Hey everyone thanks all for your replies, very much appreciated! Brett, the High Road Training Program is wonderful! I love the quiz methodology, that it not only tests you on the section you just read but reaffirms everything you read in the prior sections as well. AWESOME!! I am on the greyhound tomorrow bound for S.F. Missouri to do training with Prime and I am actually looking forward to the Learner's Permit test, as I am scoring very well on the section tests so far. Sounds like I will be studying the Pre-Trip Inspection portion of the training program on the bus, seems to be a lot of area to cover there. Thanks again everybody, you rock.

By the way, we also have Prime's actual pretrip inspection on our site. If you memorize this you'll pass your Pretrip Inspection exam. So start introducing yourself to this material.

Just wanted to say thanks to every1 again for the replies. I am in fact using the High Road study guide. I studied the pre trip inspection section on 1 of my Greyhound layovers, and spent much of what is about to be the end of my 28 hour Greyhound tour on hazmat. I have another study question referencing the High Road program. Cargo securement...... Is that for permit study for every1 as well or is that for flatbed haulers? I ask because I will be pulling reefer units. Would make sense for every1 I realize, because all drivers have loads to secure. I only ask to be certain. ( sorry for the noobish question)

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Reefer:

A refrigerated trailer.
