Is age a factor?

I am 50 years old and in good health. Should I be worried that I won't be hired at my age? I don't have high blood pressure or anything. I do take cholesterol medicine but thats it! My eyesight is good long distance...I just passed the eye test with my regular drivers license last month..I do use cheap reading glasses to read small print though...

Can anybody tell me what the physical covers and if anything above should be a concern?

Ray wants to know ...

Can anybody tell me what the physical covers and if anything above should be a concern?

I used the search box at the top for "DOT physical" and, among other answers, found this:

DOT Physical, an entry on this forum.

As long as your BP is under control, you can see the E O P Z letters with or without glasses, and can hear a sort-of loud whisper, you should be good to go.

No agility test for the DOT, but since companies have one.

There are several TT members over 50 that are active on the board. Me? I watched the original Captain Kangaroo.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

You'll be totally fine! Nothing to worry about. If it makes you feel any better Errol is nearing the triple digits so if hes still trucking out here then I'm sure you'll be alright.

Ray, everyone has already said it, but your age will not be a factor. I was 53 when I got hired for my first trucking job, and that same day they hired a gentleman who was 73!

If you can pass the physical, and do the job, they don't really care how old you are. The median age in trucking is something like 47, I can't remember the exact statistic, but that is very close to your age. You'll be just fine, in fact most of these trucking companies prefer someone like yourself who has gained some life experiences and hopefully some responsibility over the years.

You should check out our Truck Driver's Career Guide, it will answer a lot of questions that you might come up with, and hopefully trigger some more in your mind that you can ask us. You would probably enjoy reading Brett's Book about his trucking career. It is an easy read, and will provide you with a lot of entertaining stories of life on the road.

The median age of truckers is 49, according to the ATA. The median age for all American workers is about 42, according to the Labor Department.
