Speeding Tickets

I have received four speeding tickets in the past year (none for excessive speed), as well as driving with a suspended license in Kansas (long story, but essentially WY told me they would inform the DOL and they didn't), and some minor traffic violation (trying to take a left when I shouldn't have in a construction zone). I am in the process of paying these off.

I spoke with someone from CR England who said he would hire me (after I paid off the tickets), but looking at the requirements here on the website (for various companies), it seems I may be barking up the wrong tree. What is the actual story, am I unhireable? I can't afford CDL school and need the free training.

I am going to apply to - Prime - Werner - CR England - Swift

(I can't pass a hair test for a month or two and I want to start ASAP)

I basically am working to get a CDL, as I have a friend who will hire me once I have my CDL-A and a few months experience (insurance).

Any and all advice is appreciated.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

SAP:

Substance Abuse Professional

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

You can't pass a hair test, why? I think I know the answer but I don't want to jump to conclusions.

Just my .02, but if you have a friend who is willing to hire you why not borrow one of his trucks and just get your CDL through the DMV? I was considering going that route but had no way of getting to Indy so I just bit the bullet and went through a company sponsored program which turns out to being stuck with them for 1 year or pay the cost of training. Like I said though that's .02.

Will those tickets hurt your chances of employment I would think it depends, but still a ticket is a ticket so I don't know, but I do know of a few people who worked a company that was awesome and 1 excessive speeding ticket 30mph over the limit and were terminated.

Either way even if you go with prime, werner, england, swift, or who ever total training time will be around 2 months maybe more or less and don't know how true it is but have been hearing about people completing the training get the hard copy CDL leave to get a job with a different company and there CDL is flagged not allowing them to get that job that they quit for so I don't know if that is true or not.

Anyway, to the best of my knowledge if your friend would be able to help you get your CDL through the DMV it would a lot cheaper and you would already have your CDL.

Malcolm, you can use this: Apply For Truck Driving Jobs to shotgun your app to many companies.

As far as your "record", companies vary as to what & how much they will tolerate for hiring you. It never hurts to ask/apply.

Have you looked at Trucking Companies and How To Choose A Company?

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

No disrespect, but when you become a professional driver, understanding and obeying all traffic laws goes hand-in-hand with safe operation and staying employed. As a truck driver operating a tractor-trailer, you are no longer driving a 3500 pound, 4-wheeler but responsible for safe passage of an 80,000 pound 73' long missile capable of inflicting mass destruction in the wrong hands.

Good luck.

I have zero experience. I don't think his insurance would cover it either. Plus I can't even back a trailer in Euro Truck Sim 2, lol.

4 tickets, suspended license and can't pass a drug screen. I think I'll let someone else field this one.
