I decided not to go to school and to just take the driving test myself with DMV. Not a big deal. Glad I went this route. Saves me 2 to 6 thousand dollars tuition fees and free from obligation to drive for company for certain amount of time. Now looking to go to work in so cal.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

No encumbrances, no obligations eh? No training, either! If you look at the truck job ads closely, you'll find companies with schools, those looking for "recent grads", and the ones hiring experienced drivers. Which one are you looking at?

You say you don't need school. You haven't graduated from a truck school, so recent grad types are out. Trucking experience is yet to be.

Hmm....

You'll really need to get that 160 hours of classroom and practice before any larger company will put you into a truck with a trainer for four weeks.

A local company may be interested, but without any road experience, I dunno.

Al T., I hope you will come back in here in a few weeks and let us know if you are still feeling that it was no big deal, and still glad you chose this route.

You see, I know better - it really is a big deal, but you have decided you want to learn things the hard way. You saved yourself a lot of scratch, you have no obligations or commitments to keep, and it is a good thing if you have your savings still in the bank, because you still have no job! You'll probably find yourself burning through the money you saved just to pay your bills until it finally dawns on you that we were giving you the correct advice all along.

Now, I'll throw you a caveat, and that is that maybe you already had something lined up before hand with a friend or an acquaintance, but usually those things don't end up lasting very long.

I wish you the best, but I also wish you would have chosen an easier way to get this career off to a great start. You decided to cut corners, and that is never a good idea when you're dealing with your own paycheck.
