Retha, How long ago did you get out? I understand your situation. I also have a felony from 1999. I have worked hard to make a life for myself. I want to be a trucker because it is the only career where my success will be based on my performance.

Your attitude tells me you will be successful. Like everyone has said apply everywhere. In a worst case scenario, is there a shelter you could stay in for a short time while you land your next job? Good luck. We are pulling for you.

I've been out 10 yrs and a few months. I have found somewhere to stay temporarily as of this morning. You went into it for the same reason I wanted to. I have had good jobs but they never let you forget. And in trucking it seems if you are safe, on time and work hard that people forget the mistake. Thanks

Rick s I fully disclosed it. Obviously that's why they forgave the money for school. I didn't lie what I meant was when you have a felony you should never lie about it. They'll find out. And thanks Brett.

OK - cool.

Must have been pretty serious to have done all that time behind it.

Best of luck, and let us know where you land.

Assuming you have a CDL IN HAND NOW (since you passed everything), you can also try companies that don't have schools but hire "recent grads".

Best of luck to you - keep us posted on how things turn out...

Rick

Best of luck to you. Just by personal experience at a trucking company I used to work at (albeit they did construction) they would hire ex-felons simply because there was a program where the government would compensate the company some of the employees pay. They also hired folks who did not really have any experience. If this is still in effect that's the good news, I'm sure there are other trucking companies out there who are willing to do the same thing. If you can get any job that requires a CDL right now that would be great! But you may have to accept something not quite exactly what you were hoping to do and driving something not so nice, for now. Get some hours under your belt to move up. And of course, there's nothing wrong with accepting a position and continuing to apply to other jobs you may prefer.

25 years is a long time. I'm sure someone will look past that and give you an opportunity.

Retha, Do you know about this Federal bonding program? It is a program that offers bonding for ex-felons to cover the company hiring them. It guarantees good behavior. Could help. Check it out for yourself.

Contact the Truck Driver Institute in Forsythe, GA. One of the students in the class in front of me had a manslaughter conviction, and had only gotten out of prison recently. My understanding was that they had found him a company that would take him and give him road training.

If they really found killer a job (yes, we called him that) then they will hopefully be willing to do you a favor and give you the name of trucking companies that hire felons.

TDI has a bunch of different locations. I attended TDI Forsythe. If you get the runaround from them because you aren't a student, let me know by replying and quoting me here, and I'll see if I can get an answer.

I know a Guy that had a 4 year old Felony for Aggravated Assault and was hired by Carolina Cargo. Team driving and low cpm to start, but he was grateful for the opportunity. He has been there for a year now. The way he put it to me was, "A year ago I was sleeping under a bridge. I wanted to change my life. Carolina Cargo gave me that opportunity!". Pretty powerful to me. You have the right attitude Retha, someone will give you that opportunity. Don't give up!

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

Thanks so much everyone. I have applied to over 100 companies. And tractor man CC was one of them. And Matthew B I believe y'all called him that and he was not offended. I also understand the attitude of the guy who is at CC. Sure we made a mistake, but the majority of us when given an opportunity are very loyal and work our butts off simply because someone gave us the chance. As bad as people talked about Swift I was intending to work hard for them which my earlier post reflect because I thought I had a chance and in my world that is a blessing. But it didn't work out. Their lose. I will keep y'all posted on what happens because I know some of you are cheering for me. So thanks for that. I will be successful I'm just not sure where yet. Oh and for the one who wanted to know so badly what I did my charge was homicide. But for all of the people who love to judge I have a question? If someone beat and raped you and left you for dead and it took 6 weeks in a hospital to recover what would you do? So when you see felon from someone unless you have walked in their shoes you don't know what happened. Again thanks to everyone.

I don't care what someone did yesterday. Today is a new day and a chance for us to make any changes we want to make in ourselves. Best of luck. Keep us posted. I'm in your corner.
