Very first time behind the wheel today and it was awesome! Double clutching was a challenge in the beginning but by the end of the day I was getting it. Straight line parking wasn't a problem at all. Parallel parking and offset parking wasn't too bad but I need some work. I own a 30 foot travel trailer so I have some backing experience. Only 3 people in our class we all got a good bit of time behind the wheel. Looking forward to tomorrow. Learning to double clutch downshift and more work on our parking. jaycdl.jpg

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Double Clutch:

To engage and then disengage the clutch twice for every gear change.

When double clutching you will push in the clutch, take the gearshift out of gear, release the clutch, press the clutch in again, shift the gearshift into the next gear, then release the clutch.

This is done on standard transmissions which do not have synchronizers in them, like those found in almost all Class A trucks.

Forgot to add a subject. Admin if you could please fix. Thank you

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

It does feel good! I remember in school how great it felt to be able make turns using all my space.

Now, I'm with a trainer at my first company and he's like "cut those wheels, you ain't driving a 300 foot trailer" one minute and the next minute he's telling me I cut them too fast. I've already decided, as soon as I'm on my own, I'll be using all my space! It just simplifies things.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Hey BZ. If the space is available, take it. In my book, there is no reason not to. Keep up the good work!

Good luck Jay with everything. School is the best way to go. Shifting was a challenge for me when I was in school never touched a stick shift a day in my life but got the hang of it by the third day. Downshifting I've learned u gotta be at the right speed in order for it to go smoothly other with say to watch the rpms but to each is own. And as my instructor Doug use to say when we was practicing downshifting. Don't forget to Rev it, rev it !! Lol
