I'm thinking about going OTR to get my experience driving out of school. Leaning towards Schneider. Now does anyone know what its like to go train for them? I was told orientation is for 18 days, $80/ day, they pay for pretty much everything besides dinner, and then when I'm done up to 40 cents/ mile and a 3 cent bonus potentially. If there are any tips or fine print anyone can show me it would be appreciated. Just really want to get the training I need to get a local job and don't want to get taken advantage of by any of these companies. Thanks in advance!
Kal, your "going OTR to get my experience driving out of school" bothers me. Just to clarify, and then after you get some "experience" you plan to move on to another company? Then you worry about being "taken advantage of". Kat, Schneider is not a training school for other employers. They are a business who will hire you as a driver and they will do their best to keep you more or less happy.
Have you checked with local trucking companies? Ask if the will hire "recent grads", who have next to no road experience. Then you can go long-term from the get go.
More clarification: a company's orientation usually lasts three days, and you're already an employee by then. After that, it's road training with pay for several weeks/ miles.
As for up to 40 cents/ mile, the operating words are "up to", which means that 40ยข is the upper limit and you'll most probably be making less than that at a more average cents per mile rate.
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
Kal we have many drivers on the forum working for Schneider.

Good luck!
I know one thing - the new drivers they're hiring are starting at more than I'll be making after driving for a year.
