Can anyone recommend a private CDL school in Illinois near Chicago? There are at least ten that I have found, reviews are pretty similar good and bad, having a hard time seeing the differences....Thanks for your help!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Go and visit each school you are interested in, ask what the student instructor ratio ( I'm at a place that's is 4-1), how many trucks will be will available for class ( one per group of 4 min)

Go through those links Errol put up there. They will explain to you exactly how to evaluate schools. We won't be able to recommend one specifically as being better than the others but if you use our approach to evaluating them you'll have no problems choosing the best one for yourself.

John makes an excellent point and it's one of the biggies in our evaluation process - you have to make a visit to the schools you're considering. And while you're there you want to pull a few of their current students aside and get the inside scoop. The students that are in class right now have already paid their money so they'll either want you to know that it was money well spent or they'll want to make sure you don't make the mistake they did and spend your money on the wrong school.

But definitely go through our materials and you'll be well prepared to pick the best school for yourself.

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Going out to visit a school, is that something I would need to make an appointment for? Or is just showing up acceptable?

You will want to make an appointment. The staff will take you on a tour of the place and answer your questions for you.
