Operating While Intoxicated
Sandy, from a purely legal point of view, you are not an independent contractor unless you own the truck. Only an unscrupulous trucking company would try to convince their employees that they're independent contractors, and that is so they can circumvent paying payroll taxes. You should clearly run from this opportunity and not look back.

Independent Contractor? Do you mean Owner Operator , or Lease Operator?
From what I have gathered, and learned, an o/o, or l/o will make a lot more than that, per mile. I recently watched a trucking vlog on youtube, where an o/o was making $2.15 per mile, on a load with 700 miles on it. And he got 78% of the revenue from the load. I am not sure all the math that goes into it, but, if you, as an Independent Contractor, are only making .35cpm that is not good at all.
If you are company, that isn't a bad starting point. But then I am confused as to how a company driver can be an Independent Contractor.
An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.
Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.
Uh...NO! New company drivers with less than a year's experience (at a lot of companies) make 35 cents per mile or more.
