So far I have had an incredible time here at Swift Transportation orientation, but today I am learning that I was not trained back at the school that the 14 hr clock and 70 hour clock is also a driving regulation and not a on duty-not driving. I have a a crap load of things to learn and this is just the 2nd day of orientation; tomorrow we will have a whole lot more to learn and hopefully I can retain this information well. Lol. I guess it just the trainee drama. Amiright?

Realize that witnessing HOS in a practical sense during your mentoring phase will provide far greater clarity than classroom instruction. Swift uses an e-log system in the Qualcomm computer that doesn't require a large amount of driver intervention. During your mentoring phase, they will require you to run paper-logs to supplement the e-logs. Although this may seem unnecessary and antiquated, it serves a twofold purpose; it's a backup in the event the Qualcomm shuts down (this happens) and it will help you better understand the fundamentals of how the e-log system operates and aligns with the HOS rules. Try not to sweat this, it will begin to make sense about 1-2 weeks into your mentoring.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Logbook:

A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The driver records the amount of time spent driving, on-duty not driving, in the sleeper berth, or off duty. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Thank you G-town as that is very comforting and reassuring. You all are right that when you 1st get into this career you will have doubts at first if it was the right choice but eventually maybe after your first year you will love it. And I am just getting started!

One more thing. The HOS rules may seem insane, but (including your mentor phase) after a few weeks on the road you can do it all in your head. And it's an important part of trip planning, too.

Victor, it's been fun watching you find your way into this career. You've been on such an emotional high once you knew you were accepted somewhere, and it is all soooo exciting. Just remember that being with a mentor and getting through training will be an emotional roller coaster. You are going to have some really great days, and you are going to have days that will just make you want to cry - I'm serious!

A lot of folks never make it off their mentor's truck before they tuck their tails and go home. I'm telling you this so you'll be prepared. It can be really tough at times, but you have just got to power through all the turbulent ups and downs and stay focused on the goal.

We're always here to help you or give you a kick in the butt if you need it. Don't be afraid to reach out to us if you start struggling. We've all been there and know how to get through it.

Hang in there! The journey has just begun.

Thank you Old School, I will remember that and will come for help when I need it😁. I can tell already that it is going to be an roller coaster for emotions just like you said cause I have experienced a whole lot of these already trust me. I can only imagine what the emotions will be once I get going on the truck. I really have to admit that if it was not for the help for TT I might not be here or as well prepared. Thank you all! The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
