You can take the test for any endorsements. However, you will need to have your hazmat background check done first. You get that through Homeland Security. Good luck.

Thanks Big Scott ... this may sound stupid but how do you apply to DHS on line or what is the protocol?

Greetings Sno-Boy. Check with your state's DMV or licensing authority to check how they want you to do things. In Minnesota, I did exactly what you are talking about. CLP , Hazmat written test, then TSA Hazmat Endorsement background check. They require an application, fingerprints and about $85. You can do the application and schedule an appointment online in most states, but several states have different procedures. Here's the link to the TSA's page:

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.
Thanks Don, I will check Iowa's HAZMAT procedure with a phone call Monday. I tried google without any luck so a call is my next step.

It may even vary within the state.
I took my CDL permit test at one location and they said I couldn't do endorsements until I actually got the CDL. Yet another DMV within the state let me take the endorsement tests prior to me getting my CDL.
Go figure.

In TN the only endorsement you can have on your CLP is Tanker. But while you have have a CLP you are restricted from hauling anything in a Tanker, lol. TN won't let you take your Hazmat test until after your background check comes back.

It varies from state to state. Most states won't put it on your CLP - even AFTER your BG check comes through, because with a CLP you aren't authorized to haul HM anyways.
States vary as to whether they'll even do the fingerprint check, until you actually have the CDL in hand. Best way to speed things up - is to go get your TWIC Card first. That'll speed up the BG (and get you a discount on the HM background if you recently got the TWIC).
That'll give you more time to study anyway. The HM test is the most complicated of all (lots of details to remember), and the easiest to get tripped up on. I "aced" all the other tests my first time through - and failed my HM the first time (by one question). I aced it the second time, and on my renewal (thanks to the TT training program). I need to start drilling it again, because it renews again in Sept (you have to re-test every 4 years for the HM endorsement).

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Thanks Augie, that doesn't surprise me that you get two different answers from a bureaucratic operation like a state DMV. I have experienced that on other situations.

Thanks Patrick, more examples of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. I am about of the opinion just to wait. Submit my prints and the other to DHS and by then I should have my CDL then sit for the test.

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:
It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

I am not starting school for another 3 weeks and I have my CLP and DOT physical card already. I am killing time and have taken some online HAZMAT tests and seem to pass. Can I pretake the HAZMAT test now and use that endorsement upon getting my CDL? Thanks.
