Ok so i came out here to missouri cause i was desperate for a job the recruiters promise so much and guaranteed job placement and I'm realizing so much as people have gotten their CDLs and let go. Im a newbie and have gotten myself into this mess. I would like to finish my training but would like to choose my own company as I'm set to drive with werner but by what the reviews are i am not optimistic about it. It's my first week already passed my permit test. Does anyone know what were to happen if i passed my CDL test but decided to go on my own? id be willing to pay the money back but id like to start with a better company that id trust. does the money have to be paid all in full or could i pay in payments would the school be willing to let me choose my own company ? can they hold my license? i signed the contract but i haven't signed anything with werner nothing but a pre hire stating upon completion they're willing to hire me and pay for art of my schooling or something but they can still refuse to hire me.

Im 21 years old and i just want some insight.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Pre Hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Look at these.

Paid CDL Training Programs and Apply For Truck Driving Jobs. That's a lot to throw at you. If you take the time to read through that you will be much better informed. You have a minimum of three weeks before class is over. Also, as far as almost all trucking companies go, your attitude is what will make it a good or bad company. Good luck.

Okay John, here's some straight talk from a successful truck driver.

You don't know enough about trucking yet to even realize that the reviews you are reading are from folks just like you who jumped into trucking without having a clue about what they were getting into. Those people are extremely unreliable sources of information, and more exactly misinformation.

It is a plague on our industry that about 99% of the information online is dead wrong, and from folks who are not even in the industry anymore, as they couldn't hack it anyways.

Please read some of the stuff Big Scott linked for you, and please stay in touch with us with your questions. We can help you.

You said you did all this because you were desperate for a job, and if you really are desperate and want to succeed at this, then we can and will help you.

Forget about trying to choose your own company right now. Werner is an excellent option, and we have several successful Werner drivers in here as members of our forum. They are an extremely well managed trucking company, consistently profitable, and handle some great accounts. On top of all that they are willing to help newbies like yourself make a decent start at a rewarding, but often times misunderstood career. They are a great place to get your start.

Trucking is really more about a lifestyle choice than it is about just getting a job. You will need to be "all in" to make the adjustments necessary for success at this, and I hope you will stick around with us and let us help you through all the trials that you will face as you embark on this journey. You can make some serious money at this if you will stick with it, but if you just listen to your companions at school, and the fools online who failed at trucking, (both of those groups know absolutely nothing about this career) you are going to doom yourself to their same failure.

Please, please, please, don't be a one post wonder who never comes back to talk with us again. We absolutely know what you are facing and can help you navigate the mine field of misinformation out there.

Every company no matter how big or how small always has someone out there griping about them. I constantly see Schneider hate on Facebook, everyone knows the Swift memes, but it all boils down to perspective. Give Werner a chance, at least until your tuition is paid off; you may have a positive experience and end up staying with them your entire career.

And old school is correct about the lifestyle choice. You HAVE to love driving if you want to succeed in this industry.

Thanks guys I'm 21 and I'd love to get into this career but im a hard worker. I use to work as a correctional officer as soon as I turned 18. And graduated from high school Did that until my mother got sick and exceeded my leave and just couldn't return. She's ok now. I would log in 168 hours at least every 2 weeks no joke. 236 hours in a month believe it or not.

Enough about me but I am a hard worker believe me if there's labor I'm there. I fell on some bit of debt and now I'm here but the positive about the trucking industry is that I know one day I'll be able to succeed at this and be able to do it from home and eventually earn myself a dedicated route so that's why this is so important. Being from El Paso Texas nothing here pays well not even if you're a cop. And that's no joke but the living costs are so much lower. Alright check it out. I am so un pleased with MTC. They swear to you the company will hire you before you come and that you're qualified you just have to pass their training. They do a background check and everything.

THEN YOU. ARRIVE HERE AND THEY MAKE YOU SIGN A "not guaranteed job placement" contract. And swear to you you got the job it's just "incase" you fail your test or it takes you excessive time to pass your test and the company doesn't want you. The Werner recruiter got here and told us our applications aren't even in with them. So they don't have a background on me or anything and I don't even know if they'll hire me. I got a phone call from the school recruiting me guaranteeing me job placement before even showing up. When I spoke with the Werner guy he kept it real and possibly told me I might have an issue and respect to Werner I apologize about even bad mouthing them (at least I think I did).

We all have done things on our past that we're not proud of. These 2 incidents are about 2 years old which are I have a leaving the scene accident WHICH TOTAL BS and the police report proves it they only gave it to me because they had to the cop LITERALLY Told me that he didn't want to give it to me because I did offer insurance tried to get a hold of the people no one answered the door...this was overnight. Returned the following day but they got mad and called the police which they had every right too.

I have a Public intoxication that I received as well which was dumb too when I was working as a correctional officer. It was at a facility party cops didn't like that My coworker CO was being rowdy and 4 of us were with him taking care of him and of course they were *******s and smelled our alcohol and we got picked up for it. Yes of course he was doing his job and it's my fault for being there in the first place you are right(even though I just stated they're *******s haha).

Knowing this they brought me and told me I'd have a job. I'm stupid and signed the contract just like everyone else but now we're screwed. My best thing is ride this wave out and even though I most likely won't get accepted where should I go? I know some companies will accept me it'll take some work but any recommendations. As for the school I might be able to just leave today and only pay 350 which is better than paying the full 7000 but I've heard it can benefit me as I can make more staroff wise. Please please help me with some advice guys. I have always wanted to try this industry out.

Sorry for such a long post just thought I'd let you know the whole situation as y'all are he experts and get the best answer

Dedicated Route:

A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You'll often hear drivers say something like, "I'm on the Walmart dedicated account."

John, you have got so much going on in this post, I'm going to try and break it down into bite size pieces just to help you sort some of your thoughts out.

I get it that you are a hard working guy, but there is something that kind of comes through to me and rather glaringly...

You are really jumping to some conclusions, and doing that on information that you don't even really understand just yet. I can't tell you how many newbies we deal with who think they were guaranteed something when they weren't. Even when you get invited to a company's orientation that doesn't mean you have got the job. In this business you do not have a job until they hand you the keys to your own truck - then you can let your guard down just a little and be thankful that you have a job.

This is a performance based business, and just so you know, people don't just get a job because they showed up for class. You have got to prove to them that you are the type of person who sees things through, and right now you are teetering on the possibility of doing the very opposite of that by trying to figure out a way to get out of what you started.

You are all up in arms about this...

The Werner recruiter got here and told us our applications aren't even in with them. So they don't have a background on me or anything and I don't even know if they'll hire me.

You also told us this was your first week! When I went to a trucking school, they sent out our applications during the final week of class. Do you realize how many of those students are not going to see this through? Why should the school waste their time sending out applications for students who will never even get their CDL in the first place?

You need to take a chill, and quit listening to what the other students at the school are saying - they have successfully poisoned your mind and your attitude, and that is going to lead to your new career's demise if you don't put a stop to it immediately. MTC actually has a very good reputation in the industry, but you would never know it by listening to the people around you. Every truck driving school has about fifty percent of their students who know absolutely nothing, and prove it every time they open their mouths.

Now, first you came in here telling us about the bad reviews on Werner, then you wanted to tell us how bad the school is, and it sounds to me like where your real problem may be is that you have some issues on your background! Listen don't go blaming everybody else in your path until you are sure that you can pass through the hoops before you on your own merit!

I realize you don't know anything about me, but I had a really hard time getting my first trucking job. I stuck with it and finally found someone who would hire me, but I didn't ever take the attitude that it was their fault for stringing me along. I dealt with the issues, and persevered until I could get on somewhere and prove my worth. You have got to stay the course, and if I were you I would go ahead and put in my own application at Werner. You do not have to wait on the school to do that for you. That way the recruiter can go ahead and start working on your background issues with you. If you find that they can't hire you then you can start putting in applications elsewhere. In fact it wouldn't be a bad idea to put out about ten or twelve of them tonight. You can do this easily with only filling out one application by Clicking Here.

Look, you can say that the things on your criminal background are "total BS," but that doesn't make then go away. You are going to have to be real honest about them and do not try to hide them. You are going to have to own them if you want a truck driving job. This business is all about personal responsibility. If you think a trucking company is going to hire you and put you in a 150,000 dollar rig of theirs knowing that you don't take responsibility for your own actions, you are only kidding yourself.

I have no doubts you can do this, but you really need to hang with us and start ignoring the folks you've been listening to. We are doing this, and doing it well. Those other guys... well, you already know where they stand.

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

I went to mtc in park hills and had the same problem with students who tried to get me to quit and I wouldn't listen to them. Me and I think 3 other people out of the 7 stuck it out and have our cdl now 2 already have jobs in the industry and I'm getting ready to go out with my trainer. Listen to old school as he knows what he's talking about. Best of luck to you keep your head up and focus on your training and you'll be fine

Hey old school thanks for the help man im really learning more from a guy that obviously knows what he's talking about. Now you're right, too many emotions are running through me right now for the mere fact that I'm nerveous is all. This industry is like no other like you've said, law enforcement is all I've done and once I got phone calls and got through those doors that meant I had a job every time.

I passed up a law enforcement job specifically cause of this but that was my decision. Now I know about this a little more, an orientation doesn't mean it's for sure but the way he talked to me and led me to believe all this is what messes with my mind when I specifically told them and I quoted to him " I know I will pass and get my permit in the first day and study my ass off, as long as you can guarantee me a job." The main boss man I spoke to him to get a little more clear up on my thoughts, the dude wouldn't make eye contact with me,sort of blew me off, and of course because I'm young he kind of looked at me as a joke until I told him i use to be a correctional officer and established that commitment respect and integrity is what plays a big part for me so I wanted him to give me the same respect and give it to me straight forward.

He did show respect but again couldn't give me a straight answer and told me I'd be tied to Werner no matter what. Now the one last thing that I can tell you that I didn't make myself very clear, what I meant is the WERNER recruiter made it very clear and this is why I apologized about bad mouthing them, he was honest and pretty much told me the company would probably not hire me due to background issues. I told him very honestly I was an idiot I made mistakes and all I can say is I've learned from them. Since my last misdemeanor I can prove that just by saying I haven't gotten not one speeding ticket and stayed out of trouble in every single way possible. That's all there is on my record. Almost 2 years ticket free of anything.

I can't do anything but stick to it now I will follow your advice and not listen to people and just focus on myself that's my main goal now I've heard western express is a good second chance company? I'm going to look and put in those applications like you said. If I can get approved and get that one year in of experience by the. My driving record should be fully clear bc mostly they all want 3 years of moving violations so yeah let's see how this goes

I can kinda understand where your coming from. First I will let you know I am not a driver yet or even went to training yet so I can't tell you experience wise. However I can tell you your not the only one that feels the way you do. I think the biggest fear alot of beginner's have is quitting a job going to the school for the trucking company than finding out they wont hire you leaving you with no job at all. Which I honestly have no idea how is even possible to deal with. I know everyone here helps anyway they can this site is a great place to learn alot.
