Well I'm going to cdl school next year and currently I have one speeding ticket and I didn't have insurance but I got insurance three days after. I'm concerned if I'll be able to get a driving job with that on my record but that was 8 months ago and I still have a year til I'm 21?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

We need to know how many mph over the limit you were for that speeding ticket. Companies do not accept a ticket over 15mph because that's considered reckless driving and will get a trucker fired immediately. It's against most company policies to get a ticket over 15, even if it was in their personal vehicle during their hometime. So let us know how much you were over the limit.

Unfortunately, you must be 21 to cross state lines in a commercial vehicle. So you must wait until you're 21 to get started. The only way you can drive a commercial vehicle is if the company never goes outside of the state you're in. Those jobs are called local jobs and they require about a year experience to qualify for. So you're pretty much out of luck until you're 21.

But you can study until then. When you do apply, make sure you list that speeding ticket on the application. They will find out about it and if you don't list it you will be in big trouble with that company. Any questions feel free to ask.

Wherever you apply just be upfront with them. They will do a background Check and they will find it but that does not necessarily count you out. I had a speeding ticket in my personal that was considered super speeder or more than 20 mph over and it was barely a year old. However it was the only moving violation within 3 years and it didn't cause me any problems. Personally I would be more concerned with the driving without insurance but again be upfront and talk to as many companies as possible

Good luck

It was only 9 over and I have no DUI or felony and I've had two steady jobs so I haven't been just sitting lol I've wanted to drive ever since I was old enough to walk so I saved the money on my own for school

With some companies it probably will but it certainly isn't going to stop you from getting your trucking career underway next year. That speeding ticket isn't a big deal at 9 mph over the limit. And the fact you have no DUI's or felonies means your record will certainly be good enough to get you in the door.

Phillip, I seriously think your biggest hindrance will be your age. I've found that most trucking companies have seen so many of these insurance violations that for most of them it's not a big deal.

We would like you to keep us posted on how it goes for you trying to find employment though, because we have quite a few folks come in here in your situation. If you find a local or intrastate driving job we'd like to know what it was so we can help others know what's available out there for people between the ages of 18 - 21.

Intrastate:

The act of purchasers and sellers transacting business while keeping all transactions in a single state, without crossing state lines to do so.
