At Swift you need your driver license number to buy fuel. I haven't worked with an L/O, but I think your mentor won't want you to pay for fuel. He's probably just making sure your finances are set up.

Have you set up your ComData card so that your paycheck, or part of it, is deposited to your account?

Two things about your ComData card: for you, it can work as a debit card for your paycheck, even though you can buy fuel and truck parts (oil, wipers, etc.) with it - Swift will automatically pay for these - you'll never see the charges on your account.

Also, be careful with it, the ComData folks can nickel and dime you with little charges, like calling a phone number to check your balance. These can all be avoided. If you can, download the FleetAdvance app from ComData. You can check your balance and authorize ComChek drafts with it. No charge for that.

Your comdata card is linked to the truck you are assigned to. My mentor for Swift was also a lease operator. If you swipe your comdata card it will expense to him, so yes that is what you are supposed to do. It will come into play when you are team driving. That way, when you stop for fuel, you can swipe your card and not have to wake him up for him to swipe his card.

The way the fuel works for a lease operator, is when they swipe their card, it is not like a debit card where the money comes out of their available balance. The card still charges the Swift account for the fuel. Then swift deducts the fuel amount from the lease operators settlement on payday. That allows the lease operator to use Swift's fuel rebates.

So in short, yes you use your own comdata card to fuel when you are the one fueling

You know there's a cash advance request on the Qualcomm. Swift's msg. number is Macro 29. This will immediately go to your QC card.

Good luck and have fun!

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

When I'm training a new driver I have to ask about their fuel card because if they're the active driver when we need fuel, the truck needs to be fueled with their card. I also need to teach them how to use their fuel card for fueling, getting DEF or other supplies, making sure they understand how to access any money they may be having put on their card and how to access cash advances, should they need or ever need to take one.

Just to show that Susan's company is different from Swift, as a trainee my mentor always got out, used his card for fuel. Maybe he was building his points.

He may also have you use your loyalty / points cards a few times as you get close to upgrading. This is so you'll have a small bank of shower credits and whatnot when you go solo.

Yes, I make sure they have points on their rewards cards for showers or food to help them get started when they're about to test out and go solo.

We have to provide their showers in training so I try to make sure they have shower credits and points at several different chains. If I'm in an odd place with only Mom n pops I just pay for them out of my pocket.
