I see that some CDL company sponsored schools do your pre trip/skills/driving exam on location while others send you to your home state to do it. Now, in my state, when you take the test you have to provide (rent) the vehicle, and it's expensive. Does anyone knows if companies send you home with their own truck so you can use it for the exam ? Thank you for the time, this place is very helpful.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

The vast majority of companies train you using their own equipment and test you in their state. Then you simply transfer the license back to your home state.

For example, back in my day when I was with Prime you would test out in Springfield. When you got your license you would transfer it to your home state within a certain time frame (usually on your next hometime). No rental truck needed ever.

I am just finishing a company sponsored program in Missouri. I'm from Montana. I took my CDL test this last Tuesday and passed. Missouri will send the results to Montana and I will pick up my license there. I am not sure how the logistics would work with a company allowing you to test with their truck in your home state. Have you checked with your DMV to see if your state allows you to test in a other state and send the results to your home state?

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

As far as I know Illinois is the only state that requires you to test there. They will not let you transfer CDL without doing your test over again

"Drivers will be placed with a company trainer for a minimum of 15,000 miles under dispatched loads before being routed through their home state to complete the CDL testing process." This is from the Millis Trans review here on TT. Just trying to understand how it works. Do you get routed home after the exam was completed to transfer the papers? Thank you again.

I believe Millis sends you home with your trainer to test with the truck you are driving. If that's the company you're interested in, I would suggest giving them a call.

I live in NC and went to CFI's training in Missouri. They sent my test results to NC. NC had them within a few days. Hope that helps.
