Neil S., the search bar is just under the logo at the top of the page. Not sure if you’ve been given these links in your first post but just in case:

It's highly suggested to review and study the content found in The Trucking Truth starter kit, as follows:

Good luck!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hey Splitter, Much Thanks for the info. Have read most of Brett's book, enlightening to say the least. Thanks for the other references.

You’re welcome. After your dose of reality from the book. I’d take my time to figure out which company offers you the things that are important to you. Such as home time, region, freight type, etc.

After you’ve figured that out, then focus on the permit with the High Road Training program in the links together with the pretrip pdf that’s also in the links. If you go into this with those things already in your head, the rest is just a matter of applying yourself, listening to your instructors & not getting ahead of yourself.

If you’re struggling in any area, just remember to take your time, think it through & breathe. I failed my backing & road test twice. My nerves & anxiety were getting the best of me. I stuck in there & passed both!

I now have my CDL with close to 13,000 miles since the beginning of the month. My shifting is improving everyday. My confidence level has s building gradually. I keep making mistakes but they’re correctable & I haven’t hit anything.

Focus on the goal. Take smart steps. If you have anything in your system that may prevent you from passing your drug test, then wait. Get help stopping if necessary. I stopped back in ‘83 and haven’t looked back. I’m not accusing you of anything. Just putting it out there. Good luck going forward & always stay safe out here.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

THIS ^^^

I need to print this and staple it to the front of that Pre-Trip Inspection Guide that I printed out.

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

CFI does hair and urine tests. I am bald. I had them shave my back, when that wasn't enough I had her shave a stripe across my chest. Took a pic for my wife, she laughed. The hair grew back. They needed a weight of hair and not follicles. There was one guy who had no hair anywhere and he was sent home to grow some. If you have ever had a urine test for pre-employment, this is the same. And CFI offers company paid training.

The occasions that they do an observed collection are offered if the subject offers, or is suspected to have offered, a fake specimen.

Some drivers buy clean urine from various websites or get it from an acquaintance or wherever, then they secret a bottle of it taped to the inside of their thigh or some such, and then try to pass it off as their urine. This trick usually does not work. If such a ploy is suspected, the subject will be offered the observed collection...most such subjects are then never heard from again.

I have given urine samples in the states of Montana, Texas, and Indiana; not once did someone observe me providing the sample. I am bald; to obtain hair for the hair follicle sample it was removed from my arm with a razor.

The only people I’ve known to remove all of their body hair are swimmers and triathletes; if an overweight or out of shape person shows up with all of their body hair removed, I would consider that highly suspicious.

Keep in.mind, some.of the specimen jars have a tape thermometer on the side. fresh urine is body temp so they kmow if you try to swap with a bag of someone elses.

That is exactly why some fools try taping the bottle of fake stuff up high on the inside of their thigh/groin area - to try and get the temperature right. I doubt that works very often...we might not know how many times it does work, but I know of many times when it has not worked. The miscreant is told that they need to come back and provide an observed specimen, and then said miscreant is never heard from again. S/he is then reported to the Feds as a refusal, and that will usually be discovered if the cretin tries to apply elsewhere.
