Will I pass a DOT physical if I have a umbilical hernia?

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I did a little research and found that folks have both passed and failed DOT physicals with umbilical hernias. A lot depends on how it does or does not effect you. A note, from a personal physician, stating it will not hinder your operation of a commercial motor vehicle will help. But, you will still have to convince whoever administers your physical.

Commercial Motor Vehicle:

A commercial motor vehicle is any vehicle used in commerce to transport passengers or property with either:

  • A gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more
  • A gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more which includes a towed unit with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds

    Dm:

    Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

I have one and I just passed FWIW. The doctor did seem very rushed though, but she definitely did the hernia check and she didn't seem to be bothered by it at all. She never mentioned it or anything. I'm guessing it also depends on how big yours is.

I had mine done at an Urgent Care. They didn't seem to care about much of anything

Remember, usually your employer will require another physical by the physician of their choice.

This. I know Schneider has staff on site to do the DOT physical and drug screening, at least in West Memphis.

I had my DOT physical today to get my CLP in Texas and I had a small umbilical hernia and the Doctor just said it was nothing to worry about since it doesn’t hurt and I passed, I got a 4 month card until I can show them I have used my CPAP machine for 90 days and she will issue a 1 year after that since I have sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.
