Garbage trucks only require a commercial "B" license to drive. Unless you drive something other than those trucks?
A Class B commercial driver's license is required to operate a single vehicle with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds, or tow a vehicle not heavier than 10,000 pounds. Operating While Intoxicated
Hi Larry. Steve Reno asked a good question. Do you even need a class A CDL? But regardless, it will be to your benefit to get one because it opens up to you many future opportunities. And yes, those weekend programs can work if you apply yourself.
Around where I live, the sanitation companies are always looking for drivers. Have you talked with your local company or companies? I think you could very well find one that would actually work with you in obtaining your license. I went to CDL school with a young man who worked for a sanitation company and his company was already letting him drive one of their combination vehicles with his CLP and a CDL co- driver. They paid for his tuition at the school, paid for his food, kept him on the payroll and paid for his state road test. Pretty sweet deal, plus he got a substantial raise when his got his CDL.
As far as the DUI , I'm not very knowledgeable about that, but if you start inquiring at companies, be upfront about it because they will find out about it and it better come from you. They will tell you if it's acceptable or not. But nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Good luck to you!

Driving Under the Influence
Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.
The DUI is a bit new...
Many companies that accept drivers with 1 DUI will want to see 7 years of time pass since the date of infraction.
Be honest about your past.
