Does anybody know where I need to go to get a SPE Certificate in Mississippi? I have a prosthetic left leg and have already got all my medical forms filled out. I have already passed all my tests and had my CDL license. I then tried to get a job and found out I didn't have a SPE certificate and needed to talk to someone in my state (Mississippi) about getting one. All the companies I have talked to about a job said I to get a SPE certificate.

CDL:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I certainly hope your representative is easier to deal with than mine. She has a horrible attitude and takes forever to do anything. It’s taken almost a year to get my temporary driving certificate.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're dealing with Ms Leslie in the midwest center and you're absolutely right.

Definitely use the link and call the representative who manages your state. It looks as if you'll be dealing with the folks in Atlanta. They'll send out the packet in the mail and then you have to fill out all the information, along with making the required doctor appointments so they can also fill out their portion. Once finished, send it in and wait.

I know this is a super old post and I'm still new to this industry, but I can tell you that I also have a prosthetic left leg and am forced to deal with Esther. She is horrendous. It has taken months to even make any progress with her and I am STILL waiting on her to send my training SPE just so I can get my permit and attend CDL Training. She is incredibly rude and puts your life on hold just because she can. The SPE setup has to be the worst thing the FMCSA has ever come up with, only dealing with one person and getting this kind of treatment? Horrible.

Esther T. Fortenberry makes more than most drivers. It's sad a, "public servant" can treat people that way with no penalty and still make that kind of money AND a pension.
