Although not in a commercial vehicle, I was in Vegas in April. I get into a Lyft and the driver asked me if I liked Game of Thrones. I told him I never watched it and he was like "you should watch it with me" and pointed at his phone, he was streaming it on his phone while driving down the strip and nearly killed us twice.

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

And you continued riding with him? Why?

When I was at Millis, there was an O/O that was leased onto them a few years earlier. He was watching porn on his phone while driving and ran over a minivan, killing or injuring the occupants. He went to jail for just about forever-the rest of his life.

Yeah we just had a driver who was ticketed for watching the news on their phone while driving. Yes, they were also fired. They were caught by the "trooper in a truck" thing going on. Also had 3 fired this month for having their phone IN THEIR HAND of all things.. just ridiculous and completely unacceptable. Our trucks are equipped with bluetooth and controls on the steering wheel for phone use not to mention the fact that headsets aren't hard to come by.

I've threatened to throw more than one trainees phone out the window. Yeah, I'm mean like that if they even begin to reach for it. I've not tossed one out the window yet but I did grab one and toss it in the sleeper.

Don't think you're mean at all Susan. Everyone that knows me, CALL if it's important. Got BT controls built into the stereo. Otherwise, I'll check when I stop.

Keep the phone because it’s not the phones fault. Throw the trainee out the window! That’ll learn ‘me!

Most of the microphones on the built-in BT's suck. I've been running a Blueparrot Headset for over a decade (B450-XT currently) - they even work well on a motorcycle - so I know they work well in a truck. They're a NECESSARY INVESTMENT, if you're going to spend ANY TIME on the phone - and most phones are voice activated (Siri) to the point where they almost never have to be touched.

Studies (yech - studies) have shown, that even talking on a headset can be "distracting", as it shifts the brains focus to the conversation and takes some away from the task of driving. Studies have also shown that texting and driving is (almost) as impairing as drinking and driving, and watching video's (or even fiddling with a GPS), can have fatal results.

Just ask the guy in my OP - who will be spending his foreseeable future in a CELL - or the surviving family of the lives that were callously taken because someone found it more important to watch porn (I hope he had both hands on the wheel - would be that much worse if they were pleasuring themselves too) than to stay focused on the task of navigating 80K LBS of rolling death down the highway.
