Hey! I am in AA and have been going to meetings for a few years now. Now that I'm starting this career I was wondering- are there meetings specifically available to truckers? If not does anyone have any experience they can share? I can stick to speakertapes until I get home time but if there's another option that would be great. Thanks!

Hi Eli.

The unpredictable nature of a trucker's life may prove difficult in finding both a location of a meeting and the time to attend it. However, I'd think it's still a possibility. As an example, I just googled "nearby AA meetings", and found a meeting taking place 4 miles away in a little over an hour. An uber ride there costs $14. With planning, I could've just walked there for free.

So you see, it's possible. You obviously won't be near one every day, but you can do the best you can. Good luck!

I've traveled all over the country, managing a band - always found meetings.

There's an app called "Meeting List", that has most of the major intergroups meetings listed. Otherwise, you can google for the meetings/local intergroup and find out.

Typically - I've been able to Uber to meetings, and usually catch a ride back to the hotel/gig from someone at the meeting.

There are "online meetings" (though I really didn't care for them myself) and a number of other resources out there for recovering folks that can't get to meetings.

Make your phone calls (I'm still doing at least 3 a day - even from home - with almost 19 years), do your speaker tapes - and above all: DON'T PICK UP NO MATTER WHAT.

Eli, great question. I've often wondered how many drivers struggle with alcoholism. I've only met one. He is OTR and told me he attends meetings regularly. I guess finding meetings is a skill developed over time, much like HOS management, etc.

Every carrier has strict policies against alcohol use, for obvious reasons. This can be a good motivation to stay sober. I applaud those who successfully deal with this addiction, along with those who quit smoking.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
