I’ve recently decided that I want to obtain my CDL. I’ve studied for over a month for my permit and finally passed. I’ve filled out applications for paid CDL training companies last week and today am starting to receive calls back. Unfortunately, 4 years ago I’ve had my license suspended for a failure to appear and I’ve just reinstated it this year during January. There has been two companies that have called and told me that they require a 2-3 year period of having my license reinstated. Is there any company that would take me?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Keep putting applications out there. Most companies are going to want a one year minimum of just having a clean license. Some company out there probably will give you a shot, but you should be prepared to here a lot of “No” responses.

Carolina Cargo, CR England and Western Express are your best bets.

How did you get around for 4 years? You had to be working. What did you fail to appear for? Why would you think a career that depends on a clean driver's license, would be a good fit for you at this time. Your best bet is to drive your car for the next couple of years with no tickets or accidents. While you're doing that go through these.

If you do that you will open many doors to companies that offer Paid CDL Training Programs. Good luck to you.

When I called around regarding an expired driver's license, Swift said they only needed proof that I had at one point been licensed for at least one year, and Roehl, CR England, and Maverick said they didn't have that requirement that the license had to be active for at least one year. I couldn't say if the circumstances of yours being suspended changes anything, but definitely give those a call.
