I've recently been thought the Swift academy and successfully got my CDL. I'll be meeting up with my mentor either tuesday or Wednesday t I'm head out for Mentor Time. What should I be expecting or what is that one item you wish you had pack to go with you?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Remember to listen to your trainer/mentor. Some things are going to be repetitious some will be new. Don't get ****y, watch and observe, but do it safely. You're going to be in close quarters for your TNT training time. Not bigger than a small walk in closet. Meant for one person, not two. Endure it. Remember, he has brought into his/her realm. If he/she has a particular way they want you act in THEIR truck, just do it. And no I'm not a mentor. When getting into backing situations, listen what he/she tells you. But also don't be tense, relax, it will get better as you go along. Ask questions, if don't know something. That is what they are there for to help transition you to be a safe, curtious driver.

Good luck and relax.

TNT:

Trainer-N-Trainee

Prime Inc has their own CDL training program and it's divided into two phases - PSD and TNT.

The PSD (Prime Student Driver) phase is where you'll get your permit and then go on the road for 10,000 miles with a trainer. When you come back you'll get your CDL license and enter the TNT phase.

The TNT phase is the second phase of training where you'll go on the road with an experienced driver for 30,000 miles of team driving. You'll receive 14¢ per mile ($700 per week guaranteed) during this phase. Once you're finished with TNT training you will be assigned a truck to run solo.

Will, I wrote this blog article several years ago:

Going On the Road With Your Trainer

There are several articles like this in the Trucking Truth Blog section found in the menu bars, upper left hand corner of this page.

Good luck!

Congratulations and welcome!

Be humble and polite. When you get mad, be cool.

There’s some decent youtoobs of what to pack. It was overkill for what I needed, but a good starting point.

Remember to have fun! Laugh as much as possible (without sounding like a psychopath).

Cheers,

G
