I Guess We Are Supposed To Hate Day Cab Drivers Now.... At Least That Is What Tic-Toc Has Told Me.

As some of you here on TT might be familiar with the Social media App Tic-Toc where you can post 15 second videos on just about any topic you want. So far I have found out that if I disagree with any person that post anything dealing with politics or social issues I'm a evil person (You all know the standard tired phrase that is always leveled). Well anyway I digress of course this app has allot of drivers that post. I saw a post from a driver complaining about another driver (An OD day cab driver pulling doubles) was blocking the path of this driver basically this driver was ralling on the OD driver for blocking his path (Mind you the driver is doing all this from the comfort of his cab) in a nutshell the driver states that Day Cab drivers are nothing but Steering wheel holders and not actually "True Drivers" in this Driver's opinion. I have not additional information of where this took place or when the format only allows for short videos about 15 second maybe? I thought that we as Drivers are on the same team? The uniforms might be different but we are all Drivers! Weather driving local or across the country. I get it some Driver's do dum things and that is always going to happen. It's just the regular person who has no clue what Drivers do every day see this video and think all drivers are idots! It's bad enough this industry is regulated to death and it makes a hard job even harder. It doesn't matter if you drive local or OTR we are all part of the same Brother / Sister hood.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Day Cab:

A tractor which does not have a sleeper berth attached to it. Normally used for local routes where drivers go home every night.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

Chris, the driving world and the anti-social media world are loaded with people looking for attention for the wrong reasons. Don't waste two seconds of your life worrying about it. If you're going on social media to argue about politics and social issues then you're probably well on your way to becoming like the people you're here complaining about. That path doesn't lead to anywhere good.

We know there's a lot of negativity out there. That's why we exist, in fact. We want to help people focus on making their career and their life the best it can be. Be a positive force in the world and don't give the wrong people the attention they're looking for. They'll always be there. There will always be haters. Ignore them. Be you. Do your thing.

Count your blessings. Put out your own positive message for people to see. Focus on making your career and your life as amazing as it can be. You can't control what others do. You can only control what you do and what things you bring focus and attention to.

I've heard that before about day cabs, that is until a sleeper truck needs something backed into a tight spot then all of a sudden day cabs are their best friend.

When I first started someone at a truck stop said I'm not a real truck drivers as linehaul doesnt count. Inlet that bother me for a bit and thought I had something to prove realized pretty quickly to ignore the haters and go on about my day.

I do hope what ever that OD set did to annoy him was me. smile.gif

Day Cab:

A tractor which does not have a sleeper berth attached to it. Normally used for local routes where drivers go home every night.

Linehaul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

Bertt I totally agree with you about all the social media platforms everyone has a opinion and theirs is right and everyone else is wrong lol. Tic-Tok for me is just something to check out when I'm at a shipper or receiver waiting to load or unload. I do admit the app can become a bit of an addiction just like any of the other social media platforms. Around this time I usually take a break from Facebook give it up during lent (Ironically Facebook gets more upset that I go "Dark" I'll get emails every day saying "Look what you have missed on FB") I don't have an active account Tic-Tok and I don't post I just like to scroll through the videos of course everything that is posted you take with a grain of salt so to speak. It just seems that there is no middle ground any more you are either on one side or the other. The thing I like about Trucking Truth is it is unabashedly Pro Driver and gives the unvarnished truth about this industry the good and the bad. My title for this post I was trying to be a bit sarcastic on how social media can influence behavior. I guess I kinda fell flat on that.

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

No it didn't. It was the first post of this morning that caught my eye. I already had an idea of what you were going to say in the post before I read it but saved it for last, because you save the best for last right?

Brett and the other moderators kinda got to be serious because they are like teachers or DIs.

Unfortunately being out on the road and isolated so long is why many drivers behave this way. I've been called a part-time trucker on the CB due to driving a daycab. It's the same reason people call out certain companies (primarily Swift), make racist or political comments on the CB. Yesterday I heard some guy saying that a certain candidate should be president and then explained why with the main reason being his sexual orientation in detail. Surprisingly he got called out for trying to start drama and that was the end of it. They're trying to get you upset and if you allow it to they've won. When I'm called a part timer I couldnt care less. I'm earning a great paycheck that is able to provide for my family. I've never been treated differently in person, only over the CB. Keyboard and CB warriors will never approach you or say those things to your face. Instead they'll hide behind the keyboard/mic and fold immediately if confronted.

I'm not sure what happened with the OD driver in the video, but have you ever noticed that daycab drivers hardly ever take a spot in a truck stop after dark? Granted it's harder for a set of doubles to find a legal spot. Some places you have the local drivers using it as their drop yard, but most guys won't take up a spot knowing an OTR guy may need it for his 10. Personally if I'm stopping after dark and the fuel island isnt busy I'll pull up and take care of business. If it is busy I'll park off to the side. I see LTL companies doing trailer swaps (doubles or a single 53') and they're always off to the side out of the way as well instead of taking those valuable spots. There's no pleasing some people, had OD been in a legal spot I'm sure this driver would be *****ing that OD was taking up a spot.

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

Brett and the other moderators kinda got to be serious because they are like teachers or DIs.

You and me? It's a FREE FOR ALL.

The obsession I live every day is self-improvement so I can build the most incredible and satisfying life imaginable. I have a long list of big dreams and I want to accomplish them all, and beyond. I want to do it in a way that I always feel totally fulfilled, enthusiastic, and passionate about my life and my future.

Sitting around arguing with people will not help me achieve a successful and fulfilling life. It's not that I'm serious, it's quite the opposite. I'm joyful and friendly and enthusiastic. I don't want to sour that with complaining, blaming, criticizing, and arguing.

I don't do politics. I don't do argumentative talk shows. I don't do drama. I don't do haters.

I do some social media because it gives me a chance to share the fun in my life and encourage others to do the same. I also get to answer questions for people about truck driving and help them with their careers.

I am relentlessly positive. It's my focus, my obsession. That's why we talk so much about having an awesome attitude. People who are happy and successful in their lives know that attitude and mindset truly are the foundation for an amazing life.

"Spend more time arguing, criticizing, and convincing others that you are right if you want to live a happy and fulfilling life beyond your wildest dreams." said no one, ever.

That's why I tend to jump in when I see people on the road being tainted by the negativity out there. It's everywhere and I've watched it eat people up for 26 years in this industry. It will swallow your soul if you let it. Sure, the negativity on social media may seem like harmless fun at first, but often things seem that way until they eventually become an addiction and completely change your personality and your life.

You have to be the guardian of your mind. Don't let things in that won't help you live a happier, more successful, and more fulfilling life. Nothing is more important to our well-being.

While I do not have the positivity vibrancy that you do Brett, nor the desire to climb a mountain and all that, I agree with you. It's taken me a few years but I have started to swallow the social media red pill.

It's hard to pull away from Facebook or admit that you have an issue with it, but I have started doing just that. Don't even have a TV in my house just computer and monitor and net, use that for my games when i want to relax maybe a movie.

Addiction, I like how you compared it to that , it is an addiction drama, attention whoring all that.

Time to break away.....

Brett,

I agree with you more than I'm sure comes across in my posts. It's commitment time for me in the next week and I will post a summary of that on the forum as well as the beginning of a training diary. Most of which will resonate your perspective above.

My point is that, as the website owner and your livelihood, you have to be more careful in your posts. A story from Infantry Training School may convey this point a little better.

Our Gunnery Sergeant, the Chief NCO responsible for our training, called us all together about a very "serious matter." In addition to this Gunny being our instructor, he ALWAYs maintained a professional and serious demeanor. The "serious matter" was that they had obtained evidence that someone in the company had engaged in oral sex with a chicken. Immediately, everyone looked at the Marine next to them for signs of some sort sick deviant sexual behavior. Gunny went on about how the company commander was taking this very seriously and had called in the MPs to investigate. And that once the offending marine was caught, he would most certainly be court martialed. He urged anyone who had any knowledge of this behavior to come forward. That everything we relayed would be held in the strictest of confidence. That such behavior is intolerable for Marines and the Corps will not tolerate such individuals. By the time he was done with his speech, you could have heard a pin drop. After a few seconds of every eye on him, he raised his hand to his mouth and coughed. Feathers flew out in front from his half-open fist.

The funniest thing about it was that it was hardcore Gunny, who had combat experience in Vietnam. No one would have ever expected such a practical joke from him.
