Check with your DMV to be sure, but I would say yes, you have to start from the beginning.

Do you have a 160 hour certificate?Check with DMV. If it is right around a year maybe they will let you buy with the written. I’m not sure anymore. I moved out of there 6 1/2 years ago.

I aways wondered why people voluntarily let their CDLs go. In my state you can self certify to a status that does not require a DOT physical and simply submit a physical in the future to return to driving.
Is it just to avoid the higher standards that a CDL is held to such as DUI limits, repeat offenses etc?
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:
It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Sometimes its cost too. The cost to renew a CDL is 3 times more expensive than a regular class C. I know if i was going to quit driving then I would have a hard time justifying the extra cost to keep a CDL even if i did do the exempt self certification

Maybe. I just checked the Ohio fees and a CDL costs $19 more for the same 4 year renewal period. Given the time and effort to get the CDL in the first place there is no way I would give it up to save less than 5 bucks a year.
