Tarping Tall Loads

As I mentioned before I’ll be going through Maverick’s CDL Sponsorship in a few weeks, if I get through orientation. Tarping is a concern, which I’m sure it is completely true for most guys/gals new to flatbed. I’ve watched several YouTube videos and the it doesn’t seem terribly difficult. My question is about tarping tall loads. I’ve seen machines and forklifts put the tarps on top, but how do you climb up there to tarp it? Some of the loads look so evenly stacked that there’s seemingly no place to put your hands or feet in order to climb up. Somehow I think I’m overthinking this and there’s a really simple “duh” solution.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

When you get your truck, have the shop guys put a ladder hook on your headache rack. It allows you to carry a stepladder between the headache rack and the back of the cab. I carried a four foot that allowed me to get on top of everything I needed to, but I know guys who carried a six foot back there.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

I carry a 12' folding ladder behind the sleeper and I'm not a flatbedder.

I wouldn't worry to much about it. I carry a 4ft ladder and I normally don't have issues.

A machine will be their to either put the tarp on for you, or you will be able to roll the tarp out yourself because the load isn't high, or the ladder will make it possible.

Also alot of loads kind of build a natural step ladder for you.
