HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

I'm unsure of what their physical workout consists of but I can answer the sleep apnea question. Although you just did a physical and got a 2 year card unless Schneider paid for it you will be getting another one for your first week. Many doctors are flagging people women with a neck size of 16 inches, and men with 17 inch circumference. They say that, as well as having a BMI over 30 (according to WebMD) increase the risk of sleep apnea. Theres also a questionnaire you likely answered regarding how easily you fall asleep or concentrate. You can read more about Sleep apnea here on Trucking Truth. Here is also an article on TT regarding the Sleep apnea witch hunt.

Your experience (if sent for one) may differ than mine. I fit the criteria and was going to be switching jobs so I wanted it taken care of before losing out on an opportunity. I met with my personal primary physician. After talking with him he sent me to a sleep specialist who got me set up with a home sleep test. I was given a piece of equipment that had an oxygen tube to rest just inside my nose like you'd have in the hospital. It connected to a machine that sat on my chest. I also had an oxygen sensor on my finger. I was instructed to sleep on my back and follow my normal routine. The normal amount is under 4 apneatic events per hour. My specialist told me she prescribes a CPAP for anything over 10 apneatic events per hour. I had 17.9. An apneatic event is defined when your breathing stopping for 10 seconds or more. I use a CPAP and other being issued a 1 year medical card it has not negatively impacted my career as long as I use my machine a minimum of 4 hours 70% of the time (21 of 30 days)

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Lol I cant sleep on my back am a side sleeper. Have had an 18 inch neck since buffing up as a teenager.

Have also snored my whole life, even as a 12 year old, 6 ft, 135 lb toothpick. Mom used to ask me how the heck I can sleep and not wake up from my snores. Lol I said because I am asleep duhhh

I was ready at my last physical for Gardners , which was more of 1 than my 1st was. He never brought up sleep apnea...Dr was shocked at my lungs being so healthy after 46 years of smoking. Told him its Genetics doc period. Now my classmate that just quit Gardners took his physical at same clinic, not much different in size than me...Dr did tell him he needed sleep study. He didn't sign papers and went to 2nd Dr for exam no problems.

The last time I was sick was 2015 flu bug that kicked my butt 3 days. Having no meds (broken leg) I drank down 1/2 a bottle of Jack I had kept sealed since 1995, which didn't even give me a buzz , I was that sick.....(am not a drinker)

Next day, I woke up feeling great.....Alcohol kills anything haha

Surely cpaps help some a lot, but other people just because they aren't small and thin don't always have sleep problems. I wake up to pee during the night because I live on coffee 24/7 and am immune to caffiene too, fall right asleep lol

I had really high blood pressure, but they let me rest, took it again and it was acceptable.

I cannot emphasize enough how important humility and a good attitude are. I’m convinced those helped me get through.

Here’s a video of the agility test. They monitored heart rate after each activity also.
