My name is Ken, live in Cali.. Am looking to buy a used truck Day Cab , Automatic 2017 and up, miles below 500k. Between 400 and 500 horse power.. Anyone know which state has the lowest prize? California is too high for me as this is my first experience. My budget to start is 60k. Any tip will be helpful?
Hello, just let me say, it is nearly impossible to find any used truck at a reasonable price these days. The prices are outrageous due to perceived shortages. Trucks that would normally have been $60k are listed for $80-$90k right now. Used and new trailers are the same, $20k-$30k over fair prices. If you buy now you will severely over pay and lose your shorts when the market goes back to normal. I suggest you wait a while.
A tractor which does not have a sleeper berth attached to it. Normally used for local routes where drivers go home every night.
Hello Ken!
This isn't the kind of advice we give here. We are committed to helping new drivers make a good start in their trucking careers, We generally do not recommend becoming owner operators at any point in one's career. You would be better served by visiting websites like OOIDA .
An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.
OOIDA is an international trade association representing the interests of independent owner-operators and professional drivers on all issues that affect truckers. The over 150,000 members of OOIDA are men and women in all 50 states and Canada who collectively own and/or operate more than 240,000 individual heavy-duty trucks and small truck fleets.
The mission of OOIDA is to serve owner-operators, small fleets and professional truckers; to work for a business climate where truckers are treated equally and fairly; to promote highway safety and responsibility among all highway users; and to promote a better business climate and efficiency for all truck operators.
I especially wouldn’t do it out of commifornia.
Hi Ken,
Equipment is about 30-50% more expensive than a year ago. I bought a 3 yr old truck with 400k and a one yr warrantee for $60k. That was 4 years ago. The same truck goes for $100k today. New trucks are almost at $200k. (180k for a new volvo)
And if buying a truck is anything like buying a car, you will have to pay taxes based on your residing state, not the state you bought it from.
