Old School, any updates on your own vision situation?

Bruce, it's been a long slog for me this past year. I have had six eye surgeries. My vision is much better now. I started out the year being blind in one eye. Now I have 20/60 in that eye. I am waiting a little bit to see if it will get any better. If not, I will start the waiver process and see where it leads. I have been waiting on the FMCSA to finalize their changes to the vision standard. They are working on changing it so that it is a similar situation to how they handle drivers with diabetes. You will be allowed to drive OTR with limited vision in one eye as long as you can meet some other specific requirements which we are still waiting on. Drivers under this new program will be given one year medical cards and re-evaluated each year.

Thanks for asking. I am so ready to get back on the road.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

CSA:

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle

FMCSA:

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.

What Does The FMCSA Do?

  • Commercial Drivers' Licenses
  • Data and Analysis
  • Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement
  • Research and Technology
  • Safety Assistance
  • Support and Information Sharing

Fm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Well, it sounds like there is progress. I read your reply to Wylie, but didn't want to hijack his thread. Keep us posted with any new developments! I know everybody on TT is pulling for you,

I'm still working on getting back on the road. I have a lot of paperwork requirements that I am working through with the state and my physicians. I will let you guys know when I can get back to work.

I've got so many things going on besides this that I am taking my time about getting back to work. I appreciate everyone's concerns and I will update you when I know something for sure. I am finalizing the details of a book I'm working on and I'd like to get that behind me before I get rolling again.

I apologize about my absence here in the forum, I have just been kind of swamped with other things going on. I've been doing a little traveling to see my daughters and I am also looking forward to two new grandchildren arriving soon, bringing the current total to seven.
